Staff ace Cole Hamels, however, revealed he won't be available for Opening Day due to a case of biceps tendinitis. Hamels, however, downplayed his injury and told reporters in Clearwater, Fla. that he anticipates pitching in April.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the club has reached agreement on a one-year contract with Burnett, who was pondering retirement if he could not reach agreement with a team relatively close to his Monkton, Md. home.

Burnett was a crucial piece to the Pittsburgh Pirates' 93-win season and trip to the National League Division Series, which broke a 21-year drought of losing seasons. Burnett was 10-11 with a 3.30 earned-run average for Pittsburgh, and led the Pirates with 191 innings pitched.

The Pirates and Baltimore Orioles expressed significant interest in Burnett. Now, he'll join a Phillies rotation that will ultimately include Hamels and Cliff Lee at the top, followed by Miguel Gonzalez, a Cuban defector who signed a three-year, $12 million contract in October. Kyle Kendrick and Burnett round out a group that suddenly has decent depth.
