Opened in 1988, the James A. Michener Art Museum is named for bestselling author James Michener, a Doylestown native son, who first envisioned the museum.

Housing one the finest collections anywhere of Pennsylvania Impressionist painters, the Michener makes an excellent art-filled stop when visiting Bucks County.

Recently, the museum hosted a grand marquee exhibition, From Philadelphia To Monaco: Grace Kelly Beyond The Icon , which welcomed a slew of visitors. Now, the Michener has welcomed two new exhibitions, both highlighting varying aspects of the museum’s collection.

On Tuesday, February 11, the museum debuted The People’s Choice: Celebrating Michener’s Top 25 and In a Relationship: Art, Science & Medicine , two exhibitions regarding very different subjects.

The People’s Choice: Celebrating Michener’s Top 25 spotlights 25 of the museum’s works that were hand-picked by the community during a seven-month voting period.

The featured pieces of art represent contemporary, modernist and Impressionist works in an interactive exhibition of sculptures and fine art, and will be on view through July 20.

In the second exhibition, In a Relationship: Art, Science & Medicine opens guests eyes to the impressive art works created by artists with visual limitations and brain trauma. On view through April 13, Dr. Richard E. Goldberg is set to educate the public about artists working with visual limitations and brain trauma through sports photography, stained glass and more.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, and general admission is $18.

The fantastical circus performance will play up epic legends — think unicorns, pegasus and woolly mammoth — and tap traditional acts like clowns, acrobats, trained animals, trapeze acts, musicians and more to present “the greatest show on earth” at the Wells Fargo Center from February 12 through 16.

Bar Ferdinand’s New Chef Collaboration Dinner Series Launches With Chefs Carla Goncalves And David Gilberg, Thursday, February 27

Bar Ferdinand, a hip Northern Liberties spot serving Spanish-inspired fare, welcomes chefs into its kitchen for a new collaboration series launching Thursday, February 27. (Photo by G. Widman for Visit Philadelphia)

These days, it seems like chefs all over Philadelphia are teaming up for special events, but with guest toques like Scott Schroeder, Christopher Kearse and Brad Spence on board, the new Chef Collaboration Dinner series from chef David Ansill at Bar Ferdinand is a standout.

Up first? The husband-wife team of Carla Goncalves and David Gilberg, whose late Koo Zee Doo was a marvel of Portuguese cookery.

For one night only, the duo will be reviving some of their most famous dishes — think braised chicken gizzards, octopus gravy and sardines — alongside Ansill’s Spanish-inspired fare for a wondrous Iberian feast.

This should at least tide some of us over while we eagerly await news about Goncalves and Gilberg’s next steps.

The first dinner takes place Thursday, February 27, with open seating after 6 p.m.

The seven-course meal runs $45 a person, which seems like a reasonable cost for a taste of these chefs making beautiful food together.

A stronghold of cutting edge art for half a century, the Institute Of Contemporary Art launches a six-month celebration of its golden anniversary tomorrow, Wednesday, February 12.

Founded in 1963, the ICA has earned international acclaim among contemporary art museums. Ever since now-iconic artist Andy Warhol and his entourage caused a near-riot there way back in 1965, ICA has been known for shaking up the city with shows revealing the hottest and coolest trends in contemporary art.

To mark the passing of this momentous anniversary, the University City museum presents an expansive exhibition that both looks back and ahead in ICA@50: Pleasing Artists And Publics Since 1963 , on view through August 17.

Organized chronologically to express the trajectory of the institution from inception to present day, the sweeping display takes over the entire second floor of the museum with a series of 50 micro-exhibitions, set to rotate every two weeks.

Featuring everything from film to painting to sculpture — and a remarkable 18 commissions — the ambitious celebration features the work of more than 50 contemporary artists including familiar Philadelphia art-scene names like Zoe Strauss, Billy Dufala, Sarah Stolfa, John Dixon Hunt, Anthony Campuzano and many, many more.

In addition to the exhibit itself, which is always on view for free , more than 50 free public programs are scheduled between February and July. For a complete schedule of events like writing workshops, lectures and screenings check here .

To launch this exciting exhibit, a formidable fete is planned for this Wednesday, February 12, with the grand opening celebration welcoming the public starting at 6:30 p.m.

From 6:30 to 8 p.m., a free-for-all public reception invites art lovers for a first look at ICA@50 . At 7 p.m., performance artist Lior Shvil presents a piece, followed by what just might turn into an all-out bash.

From 8 to 10 p.m., none other than The Roots’ Questlove and DJ PHSH will rock the party with DJ sets — yup, for free.

We recommend arriving early, as this art party promises to be one solid gold celebration.

Now Open: The Library Company Of Philadelphia Presents A Historical Look At Its Collections In That’s So Gay: Outing Early America

The Library Company of Philadelphia hosts an exhibition of the gay history in its vast collections now through October. (Image courtesy the Library Company of Philadelphia)

On Locust Street in the heart of the Gayborhood, the Library Company of Philadelphia is a treasure trove of historic material dating back to the days of Benjamin Franklin and William Penn.

In its newest exhibit, That’s So Gay: Outing Early America , the institution chronicles the evolution of same-sex relationships through a 21st-century lens.

This groundbreaking study offers a new take on early American life by scrutinizing same-sex relationships, whether romantic or otherwise. While sex-segregated activities weren’t uncommon way back when, historians now suspect that many such groups may have been more intimate than initially thought.

Through in-depth study of the Library Company’s extensive collection of books, prints, ephemera and photographs, this exhibit addresses questions like “Was Abraham Lincoln gay?” and “Does Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick contain homosexual undertones?”

That’s So Gay: Outing Early America is on view now through October 17. The exhibit will be accompanied by a series of special programs, including a talk by How to Be Gay author David Halperin; a table reading of The Temperamentals , a play about the life of gay activist Harry Hay; and a talk by Marc Stein, author of City of Sisterly and Brotherly Loves .

Admission to see the exhibit is completely free, and more information on events and happenings is available online .

That’s So Gay: Outing Early America
When: Now through October 17
