Metallica and Vans have teamed up on a new signature shoe line, with each band member selecting a classic Vans model and crafting his own designs. Frontman James Hetfield reworked the Sk8-Hi with his own take on a skull and crossbones; drummer Lars Ulrich gave the Era Laceless a modern update with twill and the diamond pattern from his snare drum; guitarist Kirk Hammett reached into his love for surfing and nature for a serene hemp take on the Slip-On, complete with a Ouija guitar pick in the heel; and bassist Robert Trujillo merged the Escuela with a rendering of the Aztec calendar by his wife.
Vans and Metallica are marking the release of each shoe with a video collaboration featuring a Vans team rider and Metallica member. In the first of the series, Robert Trujillo partners up with skater Tony Trujillo and Tony's wife Ashley for a jam session that birthed The Trujillo Trio.
The Vans x Metallica line will be out this month. Vans will also be releasing a series based on Metallica's classic debut Kill 'Em All in March. For more information, visit Vans x Metallica's website .
