1928 TEZUKA Osamu is born as the eldest son of Tezuka Yutaka and Fumiko in Toyonaka-cho, Toyono-gun, Osaka (now Toyonaka-shi, Osaka) on November 3.
1933 The family moves to Kohama-mura, Kawabe-gun, Hyogo (now Takarazuka City, Hyogo).
1939 Creates his pen name “TEZUKA Osamu” by adding a character meaning “insect” to his real name.
1945 Admitted to the medical department of Osaka University.
1946 Diary of Ma-chan , his manga artist debut, starts to be serialized in the Shokokumin Newspaper (subsequently the Mainichi School Children’s Newspaper) Kansai Edition.
1947 Publishes a feature-length comic entitled New Treasure Island , based on a story by Sakai Shichima, and this went through several editions with 400,000 copies sold.
1950 Meets Kato Kenichi of Gakudo Sha. Starts to serialize Jungle Emperor Leo in “Manga Shonen” magazine.
1951 Serializes Captain ATOM in “Shonen” magazine. ‘Atom,’ a mere supporting character, will feature in Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) starting its long-term serialization the following year.
1953 Moves to an apartment house called Tokiwa-so in Shiina-machi, Toshima-ku, Tokyo. Starts to serialize Princess Knight in “Shojo Club” magazine.
1958 Wins the Shogakukan Manga Award for his Beeko-chan and Manga Seminar on Biology .
1961 Receives a doctorate in medicine. Organizes TEZUKA Osamu Production of Animation (formally established as Mushi Productions the following year).
1962 The production of an experimental animation Tales of the Street Corner is completed.
1963 Tetsuwan Atom , the first Japanese animated TV series, starts on Fuji Television Network and earns high audience ratings. Astro Boy , renamed from Tetsuwan Atom , is broadcast on the American national television network, NBC. Wins the National Arts Festival Encouragement Award, the Ofuji Noburo Award at the Mainichi Film Contest, and the Blue Ribbon Educational and Cultural Film Award for Tales of the Street Corner .
1966 Wins the Special Award of the TV Reporters Society Award for Jungle Emperor Leo . Mushi Pro Shoji is founded. “COM” magazine is launched and starts serializing The Phoenix .
1967 Wins the National Arts Festival Encouragement Award, the Ofuji Noburo Award at the Mainichi Film Contest, and the Blue Ribbon Educational and Cultural Film Award for Pictures at an Exhibition . Wins the San Marco Silver Lion Prize at the Venice International Film Festival for Jungle Emperor Leo (theatrical version). Wins the Broadcasting Critics Round-table Galaxy Award for Astro Boy and other works.
1968 Establishes Tezuka Productions Co., Ltd. for manga production.
1970 Wins the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award in the category of children’s manga for The Phoenix .
1975 Wins the Bungei Shunju Manga Award for Buddha and Essay on Idleness of Animals . Wins the Special Excellence Award of the Japan Manga Association Award for Black Jack .
1977 Wins the Kodansha Manga Award for The Three-eyed One and Black Jack . Kodansha begins publication of “The Complete Manga Works of TEZUKA Osamu.”
1979 Receives the Iwaya Konami Bungei Award for his pioneering efforts and accomplishments in the field of children’s manga.
1980 The animated feature film Phoenix 2772 (Space Firebird) is released at the Toho cinemas nationwide. It wins the Animation Award at the Las Vegas Film Festival and the Inkpot Award at the San Diego Comic Convention. Travels to the United States as a manga ambassador of the Japan Foundation and gives lectures on the manga culture of contemporary Japan at the United Nations and universities across the country.
1984 Wins the Shogakukan Manga Award in the category of youths and adults for Tezuka’s Ancestor Dr. Ryoan . The experimental animation Jumping is completed. It wins the Grand Prix and the UNESCO Prize at the Zagreb International Animation Festival.
1985 The experimental animation Broken Down Film is completed. It wins the Grand Prix at the First Hiroshima International Animation Festival, and the best-in-the category award at the Varna International Animation Film Festival.
1986 Wins the Kodansha Manga Award in the general category for The Stories of Three Adolfs .
1987 The experimental animation Legend of the Forest: Part 1 is completed.
1988 1988 Wins the Ofuji Noburo Award at the Mainichi Film Contest and the CIFEJ Award at the Zagreb International Animation Festival for Legend of the Forest: Part 1 .
1989 Passes away from stomach cancer on February 9.
1990 The Ministry of Education Award of the Japan Manga Association Award is given. “The Tezuka Osamu Exhibition” is held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
1994 The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum, run by Takarazuka City, opens.
1997 Beijing Xiele Art Co., Ltd. is launched.
Jungle Emperor Leo is released in Shochiku affiliate theaters.
The last volumes of “The Complete Manga Works of TEZUKA Osamu” are published to complete the 400-volume set.
1998 The centennial celebration is held to commemorate the 70 th anniversary of TEZUKA Osamu’s birth and the 30 th anniversary of the foundation of Tezuka Productions.
2000 A Tree in the Sun begins broadcasting on NTV affiliate stations.
2001 Metropolis is released in Toho affiliate theaters.
2003 Astro Boy begins broadcasting on Fuji Television affiliate stations.
Astro Boy is named Shinjuku Ward’s “special envoy for the future.”
My Son-Goku is released in Shochiku affiliate theaters.
2004 The Phoenix begins broadcasting on the NHK-BS high definition channel.
Black Jack begins broadcasting on NTV affiliate stations.
2005 Black Jack -The Two Doctors of Darkness- is released in Toho affiliate theaters.
2007 Dororo is released in Toho affiliate theaters.
2008 Projects commemorating the 80 th anniversary of TEZUKA Osamu’s birth.
