The Womens Foundation launches the 30% Club in Hong Kong

The Women’s Foundation announced the launch of the 30% Club Hong Kong– a group of chairmen and business leaders who are committed to increasing the representation of women on Hong Kong corporate boards. The 30% Club was officially launched at an invitation-only event at the Asia Society, where the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, C.Y. Leung, gave a keynote address on women on boards, and more generally, the contribution of women in business to the Hong Kong economy.

IA brief: Are you doing your part to prevent insider trading?

Historically, the act of trading on material, non-public information or insider trading was thought to be limited to corporate insiders or investment bankers, but that has not been the cases in recent years. The Securities and Exchange Commission reports that approximately 16 percent of the insider trading cases brought by the SEC in fiscal 2012 were against hedge funds and their advisers.

In a recent speech to an audience of compliance professionals, SEC Commissioner Luis Aguilar? highlighted instances ?where investment advisers fail to do the right thing, with failing to prevent insider trading among them. He noted that insider trading – particularly relating to hedge fund and hedge fund advisers – continues to be an area of active enforcement by the SEC. (more…)

This month, Myanmar short-listed 12 consortia for two licenses it plans to grant foreign operators in late June. The government wants to expand mobile penetration from less than 4% to up to 80% by 2015-16.?Digicel, largely unknown outside the Caribbean and some Pacific islands, has shaken up a usually conservative industry. U.S. first quarter GDP – graphic of the day

Gross domestic product (GDP) expanded at a 2.5% annual rate after growth nearly stalled at 0.4% in the fourth quarter. The increase, however, missed economists’ expectations for a 3.0% growth pace. Today’s graphic breaks down GDP and tracks the changes over the last four years.

3 myths about gold

Popular beliefs propelled gold to unjustifiably high prices, says Duke University professor Campbell Harvey, who co-wrote “The Golden Dilemma.” Campbell says the arguments to own gold do not hold up to scientific scrutiny and the “real” price of gold is still far below market levels.

J. Thomas McCarthy marks 40th anniversary with Thomson Reuters Westlaw

Nationally renowned author, professor, attorney and IP Hall of Famer J. Thomas McCarthy, celebrates 40 years as a Thomson Reuters Westlaw ?author in 2013. McCarthy the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the 2012 Intellectual Asset Management’s Intellectual Property Hall of Fame , is also founding director of the University of San Francisco’s McCarthy Institute for Intellectual Property and Technology Law which was named in his honor and where he taught for 36 years.

Originally published in 1973 as two volumes, his now seven-volume treatise? McCarthy on Trademarks and Unfair Competition has been cited and relied upon as authority in more than 3,500 judicial opinions, including nine U.S. Supreme Court opinions. (more…)
