Scheduling First off, I have to say that watching a Cup race without an Earnhardt in the field felt as weird as the first time I watched a Cup race without a Petty in the field.  It just didn’t feel right.  That said, I’m proud of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. for taking care of himself and I hope that he’ll be able to return to the track soon. Anyway, with the news that Montreal... more

Flippin’ Crazy It doesn’t seem to be a Talladega race anymore unless someone gets airborne. Some of NASCAR’s most spectacular wrecks have happened at ‘Dega, whether we’re talking Bobby Allison’s fence wrecker that brought about the restrictor plate, Elliott Sadler barrel rolling down the banking, or Ryan Newman going up and over to land on Kevin Harvick’s hood. ... more

Outwit, Outplay, Outlast Sometimes I think that the Chase is a lot like a season of Survivor .  Twelve contestants start it off, separated by only a handful of points. Each of them believes that they have a shot to win the grand prize.  As each week passes, though, another contestant falls out of it – not by a vote, but by circumstance. Mechanical issues, driver or pit crew error, lack of fuel, or an... more

The Great Hambino After running out of gas at Chicago , Denny Hamlin tweeted that he would win at Loudon, taking the checkered flag that he should have won earlier this season.  It was a call à la George Herman Ruth, better known to baseball fans worldwide as “Babe.”  Hamlin even paid homage to the Great Bambino by getting out of his car afterward and pantomiming a home run... more

Bradley vs. Goliath All that was needed was a slingshot; or, rather, a slingshot move.  Instead, Brad Keselowski was able to come back onto the track during green flag pit stops at just the right moment to trip up the dominant Jimmie Johnson.  The moment he got around Johnson, he took off and never looked back.  He denied Five-Time a win.  More importantly, he denied Five-Time the points lead.... more

He Did It! He’s in!  He made it!  Jeff Gordon made the Chase!  He still has a shot to win the Cup! I tell you what, I’ve never prayed so hard in my life.  I wasn’t even praying for Clint Bowyer to run out of fuel so Jeff could win.  That didn’t matter to me.  I just prayed for him to make the Chase.  It’s been such a tough season... more

One Last Race to Make the Chase Oh man.  So close!  If only he could have loosened Denny Hamlin up to get around him.  Then I’d be blogging about Jeff Gordon forcing the hands of his fellow Wild Card drivers, putting the pressure squarely on them at Richmond .  Instead, the pressure is on all of them.  If none of them can win, then it will be down to points.  Who will make it in? ... more

Mission Accomplished? As most of us already know, Bristol Motor Speedway had a bit of a makeover back in 2007 when it was given progressive banking.  No longer was Bristol a track where the bottom lane was the only lane and in order to pass, you had to bump the guy in front of you out of the way.  The new Bristol had three lanes and room to pass.  Sounds pretty racy, right?  Well, it... more

Game Changers We saw some strange things last week and it carried over to Michigan this week.  I have often told the people I know who aren’t NASCAR fans that racing is one of the few sports in the world (“everything else is just a game”), so I hate using the phrase “game changer” when it comes to racing; however, there were a lot of game changers in this race. ... more

The Wild 355 at the Glen What a crazy race!  I still don’t think I can believe what we all watched.  The moment the green flag flew, so did the insanity.  Right away, Brian Vickers lost an engine, which was a huge shame after his performance at Sonoma .  Jamie McMurray had a tire go down and hit the wall.  While under that caution, Kurt Busch’s left rear tire decided that it... more
