Elephant & Castle Tube Station
is a station of the
London Underground
in the
London Borough of Southwark
, on the boundary between Travelcard Zones 1 and 2. The station is served by two subway lines, namely the Bank Branch of the
Northern Line
between
Borough Tube Station
and
Kennington Tube Station
, and is also the southern terminus of the
Bakerloo Line
after the
Lambeth North Tube Station
.
The Elephant & Castle Tube Station began operations on 18 December 1890 with the Northern Line, then known as the City & South London Railway, and on 5 August 1906 as the southern terminus of the Bakerloo Line, then known as the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway. The station was rebuilt in the 1960's when the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre and roundabout were constructed.
