Decision Making

Email Alerts - Council, Government and Democracy
Keep up to date with decisions the Council is making affecting you and your area by registering to receive email alerts .

All you have to do is register your email address and decide which committees or wards you'd like us to keep you informed about. We'll then send you a message each time new agendas or minutes relating to your choices are published.

The Council is made up of 42 elected members representing 18 wards. All councillors meet together as the Council about seven times a year. The Council decides the overall policy framework and sets the budget each year for all the services the Council is responsible for. The Council elects one of its 42 members to be the Leader of the Council. It also appoints members to the Overview and Scrutiny Commission (responsible for holding the Executive publicly accountable, for monitoring service performance and policy development); the regulatory committees (which make decisions on non-executive functions); and the Standards Committee.

The Leader of the Council appoints up to nine other members as Executive Members. Together with the Leader these councillors form The Executive, which is responsible for most day-to-day decisions either collectively or, in many cases, through individual decisions taken by executive members. When major decisions (known as 'Key Decisions') are to be discussed or made, these are published in the Executive's forward plan in so far as they can be anticipated. The Executive must make decisions in line with the Council's overall policies and budget. If it wishes to make a decision which is outside the budget or policy framework, this must be referred to the Council as a whole to decide.

Meetings at which decisions are to be made will generally be open to the public unless personal or confidential matters are being discussed.

The "Council, Government and Democracy" link to the left will take you to detailed information about the Council, its members and committees and other related information.
