Lieutenant General John J. Yeosock, the Commander of United States, United Kingdom, and French Army Forces, Central Command, during Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM, was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on 18 March 1937. He entered the United States Army through the Reserve Officer Training Corps upon graduation from Pennsylvania State University in August 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. He also earned a Master of Science degree in Operations Research/Systems Analysis from the United States Naval Post Graduate School, and attended the Advanced Management Program for Executives at the University of Pittsburgh. His military schooling included the Armor Officer Basic Course, the United States Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the National War College.

For his first assignments, General Yeosock served in company grade troop commands and staff positions in the 3d Cavalry Regiment and 2d Infantry Division in the United States and Germany. He also served in Vietnam as a Senior District Advisor. General Yeosock was assigned as an Operations Research/Systems Analyst in the Management Information Systems Directorate, Office of the Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, Headquarters, Department of the Army, Washingotn, D.C., and then as an analyst for the Project Manager Reorganization in the Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army. He was again assigned to the 3d Cavalry Regiment, Fort Bliss, Texas, where he commanded the 3d Squadron of the Regiment. He was assigned as the Chief of Force Development, Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff, J3 (Operations Directorate), United Nations Command/United States Forces/Eighth United States Army, Korea. He commanded the 194th Armored Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was the Chief of Staff of the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

After General Yeosock served as the Project Manager, Saudi Arabian National Guard Modernization Program, he returned to the 1st Cavalry Division as the Assistant Division Commander. General Yeosock left Fort Hood to assume duties as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, United States Army Forces Command, Fort McPherson, Georgia, in January 1984. He again returned to Fort Hood and commanded the 1st Cavalry Division from June 1986 to May 1988. General Yeosock was then assigned as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, Headquarters, Department of the Army, in June 1988. On 16 March 1989, he assumed the positions of Commanding General, Third United States Army, and Deputy Commanding General, Forces Command.

General Yeosock's awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Bronze Star Medal with V Device (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Expert Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Army General Staff Identification Badge.
