Olympic Park Legacy Corporation - Proposals by the Mayor of London

Closing Date:
28 April, 2011 - 18:00

The Government’s Localism Bill includes, as part of its package of devolutionary measures for London, proposals that would allow the creation of Mayoral Development Corporations.  This new kind of body is modelled on existing Urban Development Corporations, but would be accountable for the first time directly to Londoners through the office of the Mayor of London.  The new legislation would allow the Mayor to designate those areas whose regeneration is of the highest strategic importance to London, and to drive that regeneration in a way not otherwise possible.

On 7 February 2011 the Mayor published for public consultation his proposals to re-form the Olympic Park Legacy Company as a Mayoral Development Corporation centred on the Olympic Park, but also incorporating a large part of the surrounding area. The proposals reflect the fact that the Mayor has identified this area as ' London’s single most important regeneration project for the next 25 years ', because it is where the opportunity of the 2012 Games meets some of the greatest need in the capital.

Below you can download a copy of the consultation document that sets out the Mayor's proposals, and a map showing the the proposed boundary of the Corporation in more detail than is possible in the document itself.

Further statements and letter
In October 2011 the Mayor published a statement following the consultation describing his latest proposals; and in January 2012, following late changes to what is now the Localism Act 2011, the Mayor published a further statement, which should be read alongside the October 2011 statement.

On 6 February 2012, the Mayor formally designated a Mayoral development area covering the Olympic Park and surrounding area, using powers granted by the Localism Act 2011, and wrote to Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government, to notify him of this decision and to set out a number of other matters relating to the Mayoral development corporation that will be created for the area.
