La Strada is master director Federico Fellini's 1954 drama about circus performers, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. Street performer Zampan'' (Anthony Quinn) makes his living by traveling the Italian countryside as a strongman. He breaks free of iron chains wrapped tightly around his chest, then passes a hat for change. He purchases Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina) as an assistant and wife from her impoverished mother, after her older sister Rosa died in his employ. The na''ve and sweet-natured Gelsomina clowns and plays the trumpet for the audience and passes the hat during the performances. At night, she endures the brutal Zampan'''s brutal treatment. She eventually tries to run away and meets Il Matto (Richard Basehart), a high wire performer and clown. Zampan'' finds her and the three performers become part of the same travelling circus. Gelsomina finds herself drawn to Il Matto, who loves nothing more than  mocking Zampan'' during his act, but also feels an obligation to the strongman. The tensions and jealousies build to a tragic crescendo in this poetic drama of classic Italian neo-realism. more less
