OTTAWA ? Canada's first female prime minister, Kim Campbell, is the most popular Canadian leader in 30 years, a new opinion poll said Monday.

A poll by Gallup Canada said 51 percent of respondents approved of her performance since she took over from Brian Mulroney in June.

Only 22 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Campbell's performance, while 27 percent were undecided, the poll of 1,000 people found.

Campbell, who must hold an election later this year, is the most popular prime minister since Nobel Peace Prize winner Lester Pearson, who had a 56 percent approval rating in 1963.

Liberal opposition leader Jean Chretien received a 37 percent approval rating. Thirty-six percent said they disapproved of his performance and 27 percent were undecided. The Gallup poll was done between July 25 and Aug. 8.
