Salon for Iranian Studies at UCLA

On a beautiful, balmy Southern California evening, Chancellor and Mrs. Block hosted more than 100 guests at the Chancellor’s Residence from the Southern California, London and Geneva Iranian communities. The occasion was to inform about and encourage prospective donors to support the proposed Iranian Studies Center at UCLA.

The vision for the proposed Iranian Studies Center at UCLA is a one that encompasses all disciplines from across campus

Iranian-American UCLA student Emad Borjian played a relaxing piece of Iranian classical music before the presentation began.  Professor Ali Behdad gave an in-depth description of the plans and goals for the new Center and spoke about our distinguished faculty in Iranian Studies.  He explained that Los Angeles and the UCLA International Institute are the perfect home for this Center: Los Angeles because it is the heart of the Iranian-American community; and UCLA because it already has the top Humanities program in Iranian Studies in North America.  More than 850 students take courses on Iran each year, and UCLA annually awards Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees.

UCLA’s goal is to create a world-class Center that builds upon our already distinguished programs and encompasses all disciplines, including the humanities, arts, social and political sciences, technology, science and medicine, in the study of both ancient and contemporary Iran.

Three enthusiastic members of the community also spoke in support of the proposal and encouraged their friends and colleagues to get involved.
