Red hot chili Peppers

By Zachary Swickey

Fans were bewildered in late 2009 when Red Hot Chili Peppers ax man John Frusciante quit the band. It was like deja vu, as Frusciante left the group in 1992 as well, only to return in 1998 after going through intense drug rehabilitation. It was hard to believe that the fun-loving band, who have always seemed like such close pals, was losing their musical brother once again. Now they are preparing to release “I’m With You,” which will be their first album without Frusciante since 1995’s “One Hot Minute.”

High-spirited bassist Flea lamented to The Sun about the loss of his comrade, saying, “He’s unbelievable. He gave us so much as a musician, as a songwriter, as a friend, and a bandmate. He’s the greatest. He’s irreplaceable. No one could ever be John. He’s one of a kind, incredible, classic, historically important musician. And he didn’t want to do it anymore and now he’s doing what he wants to be doing.”

Clearly RHCP feel no bad blood toward Frusciante, and frontman Anthony Kiedis admits that his departure was not a surprise. “The time John revealed his plans to move on was something everyone had sensed and was emotionally prepared for. You can’t carry someone who doesn’t want to be there ? not that he was kicking and screaming. He played his ass off till the last note so his departure was a relief, but a positive relief.” Read more...

With only a few more weeks left until the MTV Video Music Awards , some of your favorite artists are getting in the awards show spirit by filming special promo TV spots, including Britney Spears. Just last night, the pop star’s manager took to his client’s Twitter to inform fans that the Femme Fatale ’s VMA promo commercial would air during last night’s fist-pumping episode of “Jersey Shore.” Now that the show-stopping performer’s spot is out there, we here in the Newsroom , decided to take a look back at the other promos the singer has filmed for our big night.

Awkward Dancing With Jamie Foxx, 2001
Before a shocking evening that would bring the pop star and a slithering python together, Britney filmed a promo with then host Jamie Foxx in 2001. As the singer’s “I’m A Slave 4 U” tune played in the background, Foxx showed off his share of dance moves, before the blonde bombshell walked into the dance studio. “Do you need choreography or anything? I’ll help you out,” she said, before asking if any cameras were recording. Unfortunately, the comedian wasn’t taught a proper Britney 101 dance class and offered some awkward and silly moves, including the worm.

Justin Timberlake

By Morgan Schwartz

Anyone looking for Justin Timberlake’s newest music venture has to look no further than his latest tweet. While he sadly isn’t bringing sexy back just yet, JT may be starting a new fashion trend ? hoodies and hats ? with the latest video from FreeSol , one of the acts signed to his Tennman Records.

Justin, who formed Tennman Records with Interscope in 2007, has signed a few lucky musicians such as Esmee Denters and Matt Morris and just directed FreeSol’s music video for “Hoodies On, Hats Low.” Basically, he’s just letting the world know how talented he is not only at singing and dancing himself, but at spotting and helping promote other artists. Want to know more about who Justin’s signed and what they’re doing? Let’s take a look.

Matt Morris
You may recognize Matt Morris from Justin’s “Hope for Haiti Now” performance of “Hallelujah.” That sexy voice singing harmony and strumming the guitar? Yep, that was Matt. But that wasn’t their first time performing together. When they were kids, Matt and Justin met in the “Mickey Mouse Club.” (Come on! Britney, Christina, Justin ? who WASN’T in this club?!) While Justin went on to pursue pop teenage stardom, Matt opted for a more low-key upbringing. But his love for singing didn’t stop and once Justin formed Tennman Records, Matt was one of the first people Justin looked to sign. With credentials like co-writing songs for Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson and a voice that will blow you away, it’s no surprise people love Matt. His debut album, When Everything Breaks Open , was released in January 2010. Since then, Matt has just been doing what he loves most: performing. Check out his Facebook to see where you can catch him next!

Rihanna

By Zachary Swickey

In a fine example of “the pot calling the kettle black,” ex-Spice Girl Melanie Chisolm (aka Mel C) has called out leather-bound pop star Rihanna for being “too sexual.” Chisolm, now a proud mother, is no longer the belly-baring exercise nut she once was while performing with one of the 90’s biggest pop acts.

Chisolm has become quite protective of her daughter, Scarlet, and motherhood has made her concerned about the imagery her little girl is exposed to.

“It’s a very hot topic at the moment and is something we do have to talk about. People have to take some responsibility because we’ve got to a point where over-sexualization of young children has gone too far,” she told The Mirror .

“I think music is a big part of that. Women in music, very successful women, are extremely sexual and they have young fans. It is inappropriate,” Chisolm went on, before calling out Rihanna specifically, “Rihanna has responsibility and although culture’s always changing, it’s changed too much. It needs to be dealt with. Rihanna is free to do as she pleases, of course, but I think her take on the criticism she’s had is interesting.” Read more...

Violence has stretched into its fourth day in London and other English cities. Looting and violence -- initiated over the death of a man in an incident involving armed police in north London -- now has turned into what the police are calling "copycat criminal activity."

Countless citizens and multiple businesses have been affected and now our friends at MTV Hive bring to our attention to how the British music industry was affected by the rioting. A massive 200,000-square foot warehouse fire engulfed at Sony/PIAS’s main distribution center in London and hundreds of labels that rely on the facility for UK album deliveries and are coping with devastating losses and emergency contingency plans. What will it mean to the music biz overseas? Read More at Hive >>>

Most musicians shudder at the thought of picking a favorite album or song of their own ? it’s like a parent being asked to pick a favorite child ? but not the reigning Queen of Pop Lady Gaga . When Popdust asked the singer which of her own songs was her favorite, she had no problem offering up an answer.

“Well, ‘Bad Romance’ has a special place in my heart because it meant a lot to the Little Monsters when it came out. I also think ‘You and I’ is one of the best songs I’ve ever written.”

Though she has no problem acknowledging “Bad Romance” as her current crowning achievement, Gaga does have trouble coming up with a third favorite track.

“But the third song … [long pause],” she started. Read more...

If you are anything like me, you couldn’t get enough of the star-studded supervideo for Best Coast’s “Our Deal.” Where else can you find “Arrested Development’s” Alia Shawkat and actor/comedian/rapper Donald Glover in a cleverly choreographed break-dancing gang war? Well for starters, in the extended version released today - and it does not disappoint.

Clocking in at ten minutes (a full six minutes longer than the original), the Drew Barrymore-directed video contains fresh dialogue from the convincingly fierce Shawkat, as well as a cutesy montage of “Teen Wolf’s” Tyler Posey and “Kick-Ass” star Chloe Moretz putting aside their differences in the name of infatuation ... err true love.

Also featured are extended scenes depicting Nickelodeon’s Miranda Cosgrove ("iCarly") being accosted by a rival graffiti gang and a short-but-humorous cameo from none other than Best Coast singer Bethany Cosentino, rolling dice in the street alongside Barrymore. And if that wasn’t enough, excerpts from additional Best Coast material have been added to story, which no doubt acts as a welcome plug for their debut album, Crazy For You .

Even the stars of the video are excited about the final result. “How cool is that supervideo!” exclaimed Tyler Posey. “I can’t stop watching it. Drew Barrymore is the coolest chick ever! Chloe Moretz is the coolest chick ever!”
