Spice Girls: 'Greatest Hits'

Released on Monday, November 12 2007
Spice Girls: 'Greatest Hits'
"Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz: this is for you," Victoria Beckham scribbles in the sleeve notes for the Spice Girls' Greatest Hits album. "Mummy was a popstar!!!" Whether you believe the official line - that the iconic girl group's second coming sprung from a desire to show the Spice sprogs how mummy paid for their Baby Gap clobber - is almost irrelevant. The reunion tour (and single, and album, and Tesco ad campaign?) might be motivated by financial necessity, a lust for attention or just plain boredom, but it was always going to happen.

None of the group's three albums was devoid of filler, and their singles tended to be their very best songs, so Greatest Hits is a very welcome addition to the band's canon. It tells the Spice story almost chronologically ? 1999's 'Goodbye' brings up the rear of the collection for fairly obvious reasons ? and without omission. Every single from 'Wannabe' to new tune 'Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)' is included, alongside 'Voodoo', a second new recording, and 'Move Over', a "single" that fans purchased by glugging Pepsi in a way that compelled dentists across the country to finally treat themselves to that fortnight in Bali. They'd earned it, you know.

What's striking about Greatest Hits is how familiar it all is. At least ten of these 15 songs are burned on the collective psyche like Titanic , Blur v. Oasis and Jackie Stallone's entry to the Big Brother house. Fortunately, the Spice's floor-fillers have held up better than Ma Stallone's face, with 'Wannabe' remaining an exuberant calling card and 'Stop' still sounding like the best song that Motown never produced. New tune 'Voodoo' is the weakest here, coming on like the demonic lovechild of 'Who Do You Think You Are' and 'Spice Up Your Life'. It pinches the former's hen night disco and the latter's global rallying cries, but falls flat on its arse thanks to some truly ridiculous lyrics. Well, nobody wants to hear a thirtysomething multi-millionairess holler "Get up and use your voodoo, get your body to the floor", do they?

Rarely for a girl-group, the Spice Girls' slow 'n' slushies are probably their strongest suit. '2 Become 1' manages to combine every element of the perfect Christmas ballad ? a touch of elegance, a hint of romance, a soupcon of sexiness and a generous sprinkling of sparkle ? and still finds time for a coy safe sex message ("Be a little bit wiser baby ? put it on, put it on"), while the wistful 'Viva Forever' makes a fitting swansong for Ginger, the Spice who jumped ship shortly before its release. Best of all is 'Goodbye', the supremely elegant ballad that became a post-Halliwell Christmas number one. Like all of these songs, it's so sturdily-constructed that you don't notice the vocal shortcomings of - cough cough - certain members. Thank heavens the girls' producers had the sense to place Mel C's Scouse caterwaul front and centre at all times!

Greatest Hits does flag a tad towards the finish, primarily because Rodney Jerkins' slick, stuttering R&B; numbers from the Forever album ('Holler', 'Let Love Lead The Way') fail to capitalise on the girls' very British sense of mischief, but it functions brilliantly on two levels. As a document of late-nineties pop music, it's unbeatable, and as a collection of stonking great tunes, it comes pretty close. In fact, like all the great pop compilations - Abba Gold , The Immaculate Collection , The Sound of Girls Aloud - if you can't find something to like here, it's fair to say that you don't really like pop music.

Just more manufactured dross. Young kid and braindead adult music typical of the UK music industry. Let's all move to the USA where they hate this stuff and there is far more choice in the charts.

I remember being a huuuge Spice Girl fan when they were around the first time. I was like 14? Ginger Spice was always my fave. Anyway... I'm happy they have released this real classic collection! Well, apart from the songs 'Let Love Lead The Way' and 'Holler'. But they have had 9 number ones and it's just good to see the day where they would be together again isn't it? I'm not that keen on 'Headlines', but it's for Children In Need so I don't mind. Still, 'Voodoo', the other new song, is really good. It's just a shame it sounds very 90s, so I really hope they don't release it as a single. If they do another album after this they need a mature, more modern sound. It's also wise to mature your sound as you age with your fans. Anyway for now I enjoy listening to all the other tunes - my fave classic SG songs are '2 Become 1' and 'Say You'll Be There', which are incredible videos too. All of their video's are. Welcome back girls hope it's for a while yet. Please don't end it after the tour.

Love them or hate them, the Spice Girls have made some of the best pop tunes of the last decade. Every pop music fan should own this collection of killer tunes. They're really the ABBA of the 90s. Essential.

It's been pop's worst kept secret for the best part of two years. Since their reunion was announced in June it's caused a bit of a Marmite effect on the nation as a whole. Friends that I know who were megafans of them in their late 90's heyday now feverently deny any love they had for them but can probably still, behind closed doors, do the Stop dance routine to this very day. Either way, just as they were inescapable a decade ago, they are once again inescapable now. Spice, and indeed Girl Power is back. Geri, Victoria, Emma and Melanies B and C have come a very long way since they first bopped to the top with the first of 9 UK #1's - the anthemic "Wannabe" in the July of 1996. They've sold something in the region of 30m records worldwide, topped charts all over the world, conquered America, won BRITS, Ivor Novellos and ASCAP awards, landed sponsorship deals, had a box office smash movie, a massive world tour, babies, famous marriages (and divorces), equally successful solo careers, and now, under the guidance of old manager Simon Fuller, are back together for their world tour and this best of package. All 12 of their original single releases appear on here, as does the new single "Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)", another new track "Voodoo" and their 1997 Pepsi track "Move Over" which is listed instead of ''Step To Me'' ( the forgotten single), all of which, new tracks aside, manage to make the firm balance between 90's sepia-tinged nostalgia and fresh, still-good-today vibrancy. Though many tend to scoff that they were just one big marketing ploy that kept 7 year olds out of pocket money for a couple of years, we have a lot, nevertheless, to thank the Spice Girls for. Without them, pop history would not be as we know it. We wouldn't have had All Saints. We wouldn't have had Sugababes. We wouldn't have had Girls Aloud...you get my general point. Like Take That before them, the girls opened that gateway for all the amazing girlbands I listed above to breakthrough into our charts, our lives and everything else besides. They soundtracked, as a child of the 90's, my childhood. And I hope they soundtrack the 00's quite nicely as well. Girl Power indeed.

Would there ever be a time a for a Spice reunion? It's true that it's pretty much formulated pop that was of a certain time and place, but oh what a time! When the fivesome hit the music scene in the summer of 96 they where so fresh and in your face. 'Wannabe' wasn't a life-changing song vocally or lyrically but brought a breath of fresh air to the music scene - not just here but round the world! From schoolgirls to pop fans, to the parents and the odd grandparent, we all lapped it up! We dressed up as our favourite spice, learnt the dance routine and sang along! The girls crafted pure pop and gave some great tracks... and marketed themselves to perfection: we had dolls, writing paper, even crisps!

You have the immense, wonderful ballads '2 Become 1" and 'Viva Forever', the pure pop of 'Stop' and 'Who Do You Think You Are', the dance workout 'Spice Up Your Life' and the sentimental slush of 'Mama' 'Goodbye' and the new single 'Headlines'. Apart from 'Headlines' the only new track is 'Voodoo' which has a bit more oommph! but still fails to capture the glory of the heyday! Still, every song will remind you of a special time or a crazy time, and what were you doing when the songs came out.

These girls changed British music and without them many female artists would never have broken through. This collection of their hits brings back the gory days of the 90s. There are two new songs included, Headlines and Voodoo. Headlines has had bad press but is a decent enough track while Voodoo is classic 90s Spice. One thing though Girls - if, like the rumours are saying, you are recording a new album, it would be best to work with the same people that Girls Aloud and Sugababes have worked with. 5/5 from me. Go buy and use your Voodoo! ;)

A fantastic album, bought it on Monday and it really is an all-round brilliant pop album. Nearly all of the songs are very good or excellent (not keen on Mama). Favourites - Holler, Viva Forever, Voodoo, Say You'll Be There, 2 Become 1, Spice Up Your Life and Goodbye. The new song Headlines is also on as well as new song Voodoo (great booty-shaking track) Deserves to be a worldwide #1 album. A must for your Xmas party!
