SINGAPORE: The Singapore Armed Forces remains the final guarantor of the country's freedom and independence, defending its territorial integrity and sovereignty against external aggression, said Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean.

At a parade to observe SAF Day and to celebrate 40 years of national service in Singapore, Mr Teo also stressed that these roles will remain, even as the SAF deals with changing security environment and enhances its operational capabilities.

Some 4,000 servicemen welcomed President S R Nathan to the parade, which was held at the SAFTI Military Institute.

A flypast by a Chinook helicopter, carrying the state flag and flanked by Apache helicopters, added colour to the event.

The defence minister said the SAF's strength comes not just from machines but also from the dedication and commitment of the men and women behind these machines.

And he said there are exciting times and challenges ahead for the SAF.

He said: "Singapore is entering a new phase of development. New buildings are reshaping our skyline. Education, investments and new industries are opening up new paths to success.

"New businesses, entertainment, recreation and social infrastructure are making Singapore a vibrant and attractive place to work and live in. There is a bright and exciting future ahead. The SAF provides the foundation for this future. Your readiness to serve and your steady commitment to the defence of Singapore provide the ultimate guarantee for that better and brighter future for Singapore and our children.

"SAF Day is also a time to recognise and appreciate the critical role played by families and employers of NSmen, whose moral support and sacrifice allow our NSmen to fulfil their NS obligations. It is only with the commitment and support of all Singaporeans to national service that the SAF is able to provide the deterrence needed to protect our country.

"The bonds of friendship and camaraderie forged among generations of national servicemen from diverse backgrounds have also contributed to nation-building as these ties transcend camp boundaries. As a result, Singaporeans are more united, robust and resilient, able to withstand shocks and crises."

The SAF's best units were recognised during the parade, with the Best Combat Unit award going to the 1st Commando Battalion for the 21st time since the awards began in the 1970s.

And 40 personnel joined the Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Desmond Kuek in reciting the SAF pledge to reaffirm their loyalty to the nation and their commitment to the defence of Singapore.

A minute of silence was also observed to remember those who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
