The Flaming Lips have begun planning a psychedelic stage musical based on the band's 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. The co-creator of the stage version of Tommy is also working on the project, which will feature 30 songs from the band's catalog. [RollingStone.com]

Jack White will produce Jerry Lee Lewis' upcoming concert album, which will be recorded on April 16th during the Record Store Day festivities at White's Third Man Records compound in Nashville. The Third Man label will also release several limited-edition singles that day, including music by the White Stripes, Karen Elson, and the Danger Mouse/Daniel Luppi collaboration Rome.[Spinner.com]

It's the classic year of college rock -- or perhaps more specifically, it's the year that Minneapolis dominated the sound of America from the upper reaches of the Top 40 to the underground of college radio. The former was all about Prince, who undercut his Purple Rain train by quickly releasing the Paisley Underground-accented Around the World in a Day while others, like Ready for the World, were ripping off his 1999 synth groove. The latter belonged to the Replacements and especially Husker Du, who released the twin titans of Flip Your Wig and New Day Rising on the heels of '84's Zen Arcade.
