Welcome

Welcome to British Sporting Heroes - Past and Present, Worcester Cathedral's spectacular Summer Exhibition for 2010. Building on the success of last year's exhibition of theatrical costumes, Starstruck in the Cathedral, this year's exhibition is a celebration of something precious to millions of people - Sport. At a time when Sport is seen by some to be tarnished by commercialism, it is all the more important to remember the words of Nelson Mandela: "Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else can. It speaks to people in a language they understand. Sport can awaken hope where there was previously only despair." But why celebrate Sport in a Cathedral? Because a Cathedral is a place for the celebration of the precious things in life. Because a Cathedral is a place for hope, healing and reconciliation. Because Worcester Cathedral has for centuries been a place where people have come in times of both sorrow and joy, and brought their deepest feelings and their highest aspirations. Because the Bible describes God as the giver of ‘every good and precious gift', and therefore Sport, at its best, is God-given. There is no Cathedral in England more suited to the celebration of Sport than Worcester. The view of the west front of the Cathedral rising majestically above the County Cricket Ground connects the Church and Sport in an unforgettable picture. I hope that British Sporting Heroes will be for you an unforgettable experience.

  Peter Atkinson, Dean
