| Public
Works of the Ministry of Construction is undertaking the construction
of new roads, upgrading rehabilitation and maintenance of the
existing roads year by year with accelerating momentum. Previously,
before 1988, there were only 13635 miles of roads maintained
by Public Works, Now Public Works has constructed up to 19021
miles and increased 5386 miles of roads.

Roads
are being constructed and upgraded from earth roads to gravel
roads, gravel roads to macadam roads and macadam roads to bitumen
roads.The existing bitumen roads are also being upgraded from
single lane to two lanes, four lanes and six lanes highways.

| A major
road network system is also being materialized north to south
as well as east to west for the uniform development of the border
areas, states and divisions. Previously there were only 11 National
Highways of 2452 miles. Now with the objective of realizing
the long term development scheme in the political, defense,
economic, welfare, administrative and national solidarity of
the nation, 80 highways comprising of 35 north to south of 9450
miles and 45 east to west of 5692 miles, a total 15142 miles
are being designated as Union Highways.
