Kanye West
has had awards-show bugout moments before, but he's never had one on someone else's behalf. Early on during last night's
MTV Video Music Awards
broadcast, Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me" beat out
Beyonce
's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" for Female Video of the Year. During Taylor's acceptance speech, Kanye (with goofy shapes shaved into his head) invaded the stage, took Taylor's mic, and said, "Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!" Taylor left the stage visibly shaken without finishing her speech. (Check below for the video.)
Kanye wasn't exactly
wrong
-- "Single Ladies" is quite possibly the most iconic music video of the past year-- but he also didn't take into account bizarro MTV logic, where you can lose Best Female Video but then go on to straight-up win Video of the Year. Beyonce, of course, took the big award later in the show. When she accepted, she invited Taylor back onstage to "have her moment" and made Kanye look like an even bigger ass than he already did.
Hard to say now, but this could end up being some kind of tipping point where the public completely turns on Kanye. When Diddy read his name out later in the show, the whole crowd booed. And Kanye, booted from the show, apologized on
his blog

In other VMA news, Madonna eloquently eulogized Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga proved that she'd impale eyeballs for attention, and host Russell Brand bombed. Again.
