John Steinbeck (1902?1968) was born in Salinas, California. Shortly after he began college, Steinbeck started writing, mostly about events taking place in California, and he finished his first novel in 1929. His 1937 novel
Of Mice and Men
was widely acclaimed, but it is 1939's
The Grapes of Wrath
that is considered his masterpiece. He won the 1940 Pulitzer Prize for that novel. His other works include many popular stories and novels, including
Cannery Row, East of Eden,
and
Travels With Charley: In Search of America.
One of America's most famous authors, Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962.
