UEFA Euro 2008

UEFA Euro 2008

Euro 2008 is now over, and what an incredible tournament it's been! Spain are the champions, their brand of sexy football sweeping aside all that dared stand in their way. 44 years of underachievement and hurt were forgotten as Luis Aragones's side swatted a Germany team that had performed miracles to reach the final. We were told to 'Expect Emotions' and how right they were! Turkey served up some of the most memorable highlights with two incredible late finishes. Croatia, Holland, Portugal, Russia and of course Spain wowed us with their beautiful and inventive play. Italy and Romania were the spoilers of the tournament, with Sweden, Portugal, France, Czech Republic and Poland all left hoping for an improvement at South Africa 2010. And lest we forget our perfect hosts Switzerland and Austria, who both failed to qualify from their respective groups, it's a case of better luck next time and thank you for the memories! Check out our Euro 2008 blog, review of the tournament, review of the Croatian players' performances, official BACF Team of the Tournament and featured articles "Euro 2008 - An Englishman's perspective" (following intrepid reporter Adrian Atterby on his quest as an Englishman supporting Croatia).

FIFA World Cup 2010

The Croatia v England rematch is only hours away! Tonight Capello faces his first major test as England Manager, on the very same ground Steve Mclaren, and in particular Paul Robinson, experienced one of the worst nights of their international career. Images of Borat smiling from an advertising board are also conjured up with the inclusion of Kazakhstan in the same qualifying group. Could they provide a shock of their own?

Darijo Srna

Darijo Srna

Now one of the most experienced players in the team. Srna was just breaking into the Croatia side during the halcyon days of 96 and 98. One of the more technically gifted of the team he can play anywhere on the right and tends to take free kicks and penalties. The fact that Niko Krancjar cannot get a look in on dead balls gives you an idea of his quality. Most recently his free kicks against Australia (see video) in the World Cup and Macedonia in a Euro 2008 qualifier stand out as sublime efforts, the former an absolute belter.

Euro 2008 was an eventful few weeks for the talismanic right winger. Following a successful double winning season with Shakhtar Donetsk he played like a man on a mission, bagging his customary tournament goal with the opener in the victory against Germany. His partnership on the right with Vedran Corluka was as solid as ever whilst going forward he showed class and skill without his usual showboating, maintaining Croatia's fluid approach play and inventive teamwork.

He was unfortunate not to score one of his trademark free-kicks in the ill-fated quarter final against Turkey, Recber Rustu pulling off a stunning one-handed save in the latter stages. And so visibly upset was he by the defeat, he will be an even stronger motivational force by the time the World Cup qualifying kicks off next season.

Darijo is expected to take over from Niko Kovac as Croatia's captain this season, although this does depend somewhat on Kovac's retirement plans which have recently been put on hold.
