T
his map is a copper plate engraving dating to 1789 by the little known French mapmaker Seale. It is titled ?Mesopotamia & Babylonia? and depicts the regions surrounding the Tigris & Euphrates Rivers. Today this area comprises some of the most volatile parts of the Middle East: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Syria, Israel, and Palestine. The map extends east as far as Cappadocia in modern day central Turkey and as far south as the Arabian Desert.
Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab people?s attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago!
