The second album from the ex-American idol fronted band is a collection of pop-rock from a band still defining their sound. The heavy guitars underlying opening track You Don?t Belong announce Daughtry are back and mean business. However the heaviness feels a little misleading; the rest of the album doesn?t follow suit but depending on your musical taste, that could be a good thing.
On Leave This Town, Daughtry enlisted the song writing skills of various musicians, most notabley Chad Kroeger from Nickelback contributing to two tracks, including the commercial success No Surprise. When this track comes on the radio, you can be forgiven for thinking you?re listening to Chad Kroeger himself, the similarities in voice and style between Kroeger and Daughtry are apparent and often written about.
"A lot of the lyrics are about how leaps of faith can set us free or tie us down, and realising that we often find heartache when we run from something and redemption when we run toward something," singer Chris Daughtry said.
First single No Surprise ticks all the right boxes and is one of the most appealing tracks here. Every Time You Turn Around and What I Mean To Say are typical pop-rock with catchy choruses but Daughtry is at his best when he?s vulnerable. He?s more believable as the lovelorn balladeer on Life After You, than the screaming rocker. A highlight is Open Up Your Eyes, telling a story of love and death, and pondering the afterlife; ?No one knows the pain you left behind, and all the peace you could never find...Welcome to the first day of your life?. September takes Daughtry back to his childhood in a small town in North Carolina, and having to ?Leave This Town? to make a bigger life for himself. Country singer Vince Gill lends his vocals to the country influenced Tennessee Line. The closing strings are a nice touch but feel misplaced. Closer Call Your Name is a solid end to the record, Daughtry again drawing on his vulnerability to sell the story and it works.
Leave This Town is good, but nothing about it gives me a feeling it will be remembered in a few years time.
