ARTIST INTERVIEW
Access All Areas.net.au: When was the first time you guys realised that you wanted to pursue music as a career?
Colin: Music started for us when Josh and I met in 2002. We had both only just started playing guitar and myself (Colin) writing songs. Just the two of us catching up once a week...it grew very quickly from there.

Access All Areas.net.au: You guys are taking a new music direction with the new EP. What was it that led you guys to decide that you guys need to make a change with your music?
Colin: You?ve got to keep it fresh you know? We aren?t 17 anymore....I think we wanted to find a sound that was something that we could call our own also. I don?t know if we got there, but we sure tried.

Access All Areas.net.au: How has Dane?s departure affect the band personally and musically?
Colin: This was a shake up, but not really an unexpected one. We?re still on good terms. For most people music is a marathon as opposed to a sprint. We had been sprinting for quite a while and it got to him in the end I guess. Musically it hasn?t really affected our direction as I do most of the writing. I guess the main challenge musically was writing for another voice. You have to take into account a new tone and range etc......Couldn?t be happier with the results though!

Access All Areas.net.au: How did you guys first meet Justin?
Colin: We took a very long time to find a replacement. We are very much a ?singers? band i.e. you have to be a great singer as opposed to just a great friend for us to be interested. We had been actively searching when eventually he replied to an ad we had in a local magazine. He was about the 20th audition and we liked what we heard as well as clicking very well on a personal level.

Access All Areas.net.au: How did you guys come up with the new band name, Starlight Theatre?
Colin: This wasn?t anything terribly profound unfortunately. I really wish the story was better....we just wrote down words that we liked and thought represented where we wanted to go musically, then matched them up in various combinations. Starlight Theatre stuck.

Access All Areas.net.au: Which song off the new EP best defines the band?s state of mind at the moment?
Colin: I would say without much doubt that ?How Long? is where we are at musically at the moment. We love the momentum and think it could sound good in a stadium....sigh....

Access All Areas.net.au: Which song is the hardest to write and record, and why?
Colin: On this record ?Clear View? would have been the hardest. Matt (producer) loved the chorus but wanted a lot of verse alternatives. I struggle to bring new melodies to lyrics I already had melodies for....I had like four alternative verses and Matt didn?t like any of them!

Access All Areas.net.au: Can you tell us more about the new single, ?Clearview??
Colin: Well we weren?t intending to record Clear View on this record. Matt heard us play it acoustic however and insisted we record it. We were hesitant at first (it used to be a piano ballad), but Matt had a very specific direction that he wanted to take with the song. In the end he convinced us. Lyrically the song is about really beginning to see someone for who they really are, past the initial infatuation.

Access All Areas.net.au: You guys are working with some notable producers on the new EP. Is there more room for creative freedom on this EP than on Aperture?
Colin: I wouldn?t say there was more room, probably just more ideas being thrown around. There are a couple of great moments on the record that we had nothing to do with! Certainly if we had an idea, it was much easier to see it come to fruition working with some of the best people.

Access All Areas.net.au: What has been the most challenging aspect of your career so far?
Colin: I think one of the most challenging aspects is staying friends through the insanity. When Dane left we all re-connected very closely again to try and make sure we were still in this for the right reasons. I think now we have a new energy.

Access All Areas.net.au: There are many new bands making a name in the mainstream music industry. How do you guys hope to set yourselves apart from other bands?
Colin: We would like to think that we could bring a little more ?realism? and honesty to music then perhaps other pop acts are doing. Hopefully giving something that people can really connect with.

Access All Areas.net.au: Good luck with your music, and lastly ? what would you like your fans and those who?ve yet to listen to your music to know about Starlight Theatre?
Colin: That we?ll be in your town soon! Make sure you make it out!

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Brisbane four-piece, Starlight Theatre ? formerly known as Falling Short ?have announced national tour dates in support of the band?s new debut EP ?True Love Stories Never Have Happy Endings? due out in October.

Starlight Theatre could be described as a cosmic mixture/violent clash of Unwritten Law, Anberlin, Angels and Airwaves and a smidge of U2.

Having formed in 2006 under the guise of Falling Short, the band have grown from strength to strength having played over 300 shows including landing high profile supports with American rockers Switchfoot, MxPx and Antiskeptic. The four-piece also released a self-titled EP independently which spawned two singles- ?Supernova?, which received mild airplay across the country and throughout Paris and New York; and ?Billboards?, which held the coveted number one position on the Triple J Unearthed National Charts for four weeks.

As lead guitarist, Colin Moore, said ? a change in name was inevitable. ?The name Falling Short had taken on so many forms. Josh and I have been playing together under that name since we were 17/18. We've changed members and direction so many times?.

?We wanted a name that encapsulated where we wanted to go with our sound?. And a sound the band is really excited about.

Having been shacked up in to the studio for the most part of this year, Starlight Theatre?s come out the other end with an impressive 4-track EP which is due for release in October.

The EP features four rock/pop songs which demonstrate a big sound, big production and great catchy songs that will stick in your head. Recorded with Matt Bartlem (The Butterfly Effect) and mixed by Forrester Savell (Delta Goodrem, Karnivool, Birds of Tokyo, Shannon Noll, Human Nature, Calling All Cars), the EP features the infectious first single ?Clearview? which was mixed in Tennessee in the United States by credited producer J.R. McNeely (Underoath, Anberlin, Emery) whose most recent work is on Paramore?s new album ?Brand New Eyes?.

?It was written while we were on tour in Port Macquarie, largely out of missing home and in particular, that special girl,? says Colin. ?It's about getting past the initial infatuation with someone and arriving at the point where you can see them for who they really are?.

Speaking as a whole on the EP, Colin says that ?stylistically we've made some changes and sonically it's definitely our best product to date. This record is definately our most accessible work thus far, a little smoother, a little more ambience and perhaps slightly simpler then our previous 'Aperture' record?.

In support of the EP, the band will embark on a national tour hitting New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.

?These songs are a little different to what we?ve done before, so we?ve been spending serious hours trying to get them somewhere close to what we put down in the studio...It?s a little ambitious but we would love our shows to be more of an experience then just another rock set? says Colin of the band?s live show.

For four lads who originally hailed from Central Queensland, this is one Brisbane band you?re about to hear a lot more of!
