Pomp and pageantry are an integral part of grand occasions, ceremonies and celebrations. In Singapore, many of the ceremonial trappings have been simplified. Nonetheless, basic ceremonial proceedings have been preserved to add dignity, stateliness and sometimes solemnity to the occasion.
Two groups of young service personnel provide the ceremonial logistical support. The first group is the

The Presidential Crest is used only by the President and his Office. It is used on letterheads, crockery, official invitations, programmes and other materials connected to the Presidency. It hangs over the Main Doorway of the Istana and on the gates within the Istana Domain.

The Presidential Crest consists of a red and white shield on which is emblazoned a lion carrying a stalk of laurel. Above the shield, a crescent moon and five stars crown the crest. Below the orchid wreath is a red banner with the word "Singapura". The shield symbolises the President as the Defender of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore. The red and white colours represent universal brotherhood and equality of man; and prevailing and everlasting purity and virtue respectively.
The lion carrying a stalk of laurel symbolises victory and glory to Singapore, the Lion City.
The crescent moon represents a young country on the ascent in its ideals of establishing democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality indicated by the five stars.

The President's Personal Standard is flown from the highest point on the Istana main building. The Standard is flown daily from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm, or until such time when the President has left for his private residence.
