Founding of Newcastle
Now Webster City, Iowa or Remembrances of Newcastle
by Harriet Bonebright-Closz.
This is an interesting
little book, that was published in 1921; it was narrated
by Sarah Brewer-Bonebright, and written by her daughter.
Mrs. Bonebright was a child when her father settled
Newcastle, and this is her story, the way she remembers
the pioneer days. Reading about the pioneer way of
life makes me very glad I live today.

An Illustrated History
of Monroe County, Iowa
- published in 1896. A
general history of Monroe County written by Frank
Hickenlooper. Although some of the book is the typical
"dry" history, there are some chapters that
have a humurous twist to them, especially the ones
that are describing pioneer life. All in all, a very
enjoyable and informative book. It does not contain
biographical sketches of citizens. It does have an
extensive chapter on the Civil War and the regiments
represented by Monroe County men, including a sketch
of a rebel prison-pen by J. T. Young, who was there.
The History
of Jefferson County, Iowa
- Published
in 1879. Contains State and County history, and a
Biographical Directory, according to township.
