This book does not contain the usual biographies of the individuals, rather it contains events in their lives as "pioneers" of Polk County. These were published in the Sunday Register and Leader, during the years of 1904-5-6; and the author of the book, compiled and published them in two books.

History of Pottawattamie County, Iowa Volume 1 (1907) Now completed, there are 2 surname indexes, so please check both. The links to the surname indexes are on the "Map" page. (This volume is located off site, link will open in a new window. It is still one of my book sites though.)

History of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, 1907, Volume II. This volume contains all biographies of representative citizens of this county, and some of the pioneer settlers.

Founding of Newcastle Now Webster City, Iowa or Remembrances of Newcastle by Harriet Bonebright-Closz. This is an interesting little book, that was published in 1921; it was narrated by Sarah Brewer-Bonebright, and written by her daughter. Mrs. Bonebright was a child when her father settled Newcastle, and this is her story, the way she remembers the pioneer days. Reading about the pioneer way of life makes me very glad I live today.

Past and Present of Winneshiek County Published 1913. Volume 1 This volume is the history of the founding and settling of Winnesheik County, the last 53 pages are a Chronology of events from 1840 up to 1913. There are two "all name" indexes, (not in book). One for the main part of the book, and one for the Chronology.

History of Fremont County, Iowa; 1881 ; History of Fremont County, Iowa with biographical sketches of prominent citizens of the time, by township. All biographies are online. IN PROGRESS

Many images of citizens and of Red Oak in the early days. A few brief bios..Chronology Appendix at end of book with a Roster of Company M and B from the Spanish American War. All name index in progress.

An Illustrated History of Monroe County, Iowa - published in 1896. A general history of Monroe County written by Frank Hickenlooper. Although some of the book is the typical "dry" history, there are some chapters that have a humurous twist to them, especially the ones that are describing pioneer life. All in all, a very enjoyable and informative book. It does not contain biographical sketches of citizens. It does have an extensive chapter on the Civil War and the regiments represented by Monroe County men, including a sketch of a rebel prison-pen by J. T. Young, who was there.

The History of Jefferson County, Iowa - Published in 1879. Contains State and County history, and a Biographical Directory, according to township.
