Bon Jovi Pack in Hits and Hardcore Fans at Free Central Park Show

7/14/08, 5:31 pm EST

“This is the Great Lawn in the greatest park, in the greatest city in the universe,” Jon Bon Jovi marveled before performing what easily could have been one of the biggest concerts New York City’s Central Park has ever seen. Over 67,500 free tickets were distributed to the 50,000-capacity space — a solid chunk going to fans who flew in from other states, bid desperately on eBay and even camped out from 6 PM the night before to attend the two-hour MLB All-Star Week performance.

A woman in the front of the crowd with an ankle-to-knee cast spoke before the show about how she popped her knee Thursday. “All I could think was: how am I going to get to Bon Jovi?” she said.

The band played hits spanning a 25-year career — everything from “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name” off 1986’s Slippery When Wet to more recent hits like “Have a Nice Day” and “Who Says You Can’t Go Home.” The band spiced up tunes like “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” with bridges from the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout,” and interrupted their performance of “Bad Medicine” with a high-energy excerpt from the Isley Brothers’ “Shout.”

Heavy Storm Winds Can’t Stop Bret Michaels and Rocklahoma 2008

7/14/08, 5:17 pm EST

Storms almost paralyzed this weekend’s Rocklahoma, but luckily the hair metal festival persevered with performances by Bret Michaels, Ace Frehley, Queensryche and Ratt. Heavy winds and rain forced the collapse of two stages, forcing the Lynch Mob to play a shortened set while eyes watched the dark clouds engulfing the site. Eleven people sustained weather-induced injuries, including one woman who suffered a broken arm. To quote the festival’s on-site weather man, “In just three minutes, we went from rain showers to a storm that I have not seen in my 30 years.”

The storms didn’t stop Bret Michaels from taking the stage Thursday night for the festival’s most acclaimed set. (more…)

“Rock Band 2″ Track List: New Gn’R Joined By AC/DC, Dylan and 72 More

7/14/08, 3:32 pm EST

Today at the E3 video game convention, Harmonix, the makers of Rock Band 2 , revealed the game’s much-anticipated track list. As we reported earlier today , the track list is headlined by the Guns n’ Roses song “Shackler’s Revenge,” but even without the debut of a new Gn’R song, the list of playable tunes is still jaw-dropping. In all, fans of the game will have 75 songs to jam to, spanning the ’60s to today. All walks of rock are represented: there’s Beck, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Sonic Youth, Talking Heads and Linkin Park. For the classic rockers, the Allman Brothers, Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead and the Who are all represented. And for the ladies to sing along with, there’s songs by Joan Jett, Blondie, Paramore, the Go-Gos and Alanis Morissette. Harmonix obviously feels that in order to set itself apart from the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour , it needs to win the battle of the track lists, and they don’t disappoint. As an added bonus, Harmonix and MTV Games — who initially wanted to put 100 songs in the game — will release an additional 20 master recordings for the game for free. Plus, all those songs that came with or you purchased for the original Rock Band can be uploaded to 2 . It won’t really tip the scales, but there’s also nine bonus tracks by bands that include Harmonix employees. To check out the entire list of 75 songs, click after the jump. Your move, Guitar Hero .

Radiohead Premiere Laser-Made “House of Cards” Video

7/14/08, 1:44 pm EST

The video for Radiohead’s “House of Cards,” made without the use of conventional cameras, finally debuted today. Zoo Films, who directed the clip, used two different camera-less technologies to create the video. If you ask us, the whole thing looks like The Lawnmower Man or the bad guy in RoboCop 2 , but it’s still pretty cool. To make matters even cooler, the band will make all the data compiled to create the images available to fans, allowing Radiohead die-hards who know how to manipulate such information to make their own versions of the In Rainbows song. “I always like the idea of using technology in a way that it wasn’t meant to be used, the struggle to get your head round what you can do with it. I liked the idea of making a video of human beings and real life and time without using any cameras, just lasers, so there are just mathematical points — and how strangely emotional it ended up being,” Thom Yorke said. To see more in-depth of how “House of Cards” was created, check out the Making-Of video here .

David Lee Roth Imposter “Scamming” Ontario, Allergic to Nuts

7/14/08, 12:52 pm EST

It turns out that whole story about David Lee Roth having an allergic reaction to nuts while driving is true, except it didn’t involve the real David Lee Roth. According to Ontario police, there’s a man running around the province impersonating the Van Halen frontman . It was this mock Diamond Dave who was saved by police after peanuts caused an allergic reaction. The real David Lee Roth already issued a statement , saying he was not saved by Ontario police and he’s certainly not allergic to anything, “besides criticism.” A police spokesperson is now saying this fake Roth has “scammed a lot of people” up north and that he could be charged with obstruction of justice for giving a false name to cops. But the story doesn’t end there: The faux Roth was seen partying at a nightclub in Hamilton, Ontario, where he reportedly sang a song and was partying with “two nurses from the hospital.” The man was wearing expensive clothes and “a hospital bracelet,” so either the fake Dave ate more nuts or he escaped the mental ward with two nurses and the belief that he really is David Lee Roth. A message to Canadian fans: approach all Diamond Daves with caution.

Ticketmaster Accused of “Price Gouging” in Canada

7/14/08, 12:03 pm EST

As if the imminent Live Nation ticketing venture wasn’t enough for Ticketmaster, the company now has to deal with accusations of “ price gouging ” by angry Elton John fans in Saskatchewan. When tickets for Elton John’s performance in the capital city of Saskatoon went on sale, fans discovered that Ticketmaster had already sold out of their allotment, and instead recommended fans try to buy tickets at Tickets Now, a secondary ticketing site owned by Ticketmaster. Not only did Tickets Now already have tickets for sale, but they were also demanding much higher prices than originally posted on Ticketmaster, leading fans to accuse the company of scalping and getting the province’s Justice Minister involved.

Ticketmaster said they were not aware they were shuffling fans to Tickets Now and has since removed the link. The company’s head of ticketing in Saskatchewan said, “The inventory belongs to the promoter and artist, and the artist determines who has what privileges in advance of the public on sale or not, like fan clubs for instance.” The situation is similar to an incident last year where angry parents of Hannah Montana fans accused Ticketmaster of being easily penetrable by scalpers looking to hit big on the secondary ticketing market.

Grunge Forefathers Green River Reunite to Salute Sub Pop’s 20th Anniversary With Nostalgic Noise

7/14/08, 11:28 am EST

Grunge godfathers Green River played with their original lineup for the first time in 20 years last night, lacking none of the gut-clenching angst that influenced some of modern rock’s most revered musicians. Featuring members of Pearl Jam (bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard) and Mudhoney (singer Mark Arm and guitarist Steve Turner) plus third guitarist Bruce Fairweather (later of Mother Love Bone and Love Battery) and drummer Alex Vincent, the band pre-headlined SP20, a two-day festival celebrating indie label Sub Pop’s 20th anniversary. It was around dusk at Redmond, Washington’s Marymoor Park when they took the stage; without pause Arm screamed into “Come on Down” and stayed full-throttle for the next 40 minutes.

Though the set was the weekend’s most anticipated, the several thousand in the crowd were initially hesitant. (more…)

George Martin Honored By Beatles Widows at Grammy Event

7/14/08, 10:39 am EST

Famed Beatles producer George Martin was honored with the Grammy Foundation Leadership award by the widows of John Lennon and George Harrison at a ceremony Saturday night in Los Angeles. Both Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison chaired the event, which honored Martin’s humanitarian and charitable efforts. While Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were both listed as “event chairs,” neither was in attendance. Several artists came out to honor the “ Guinness World Records’ most successful producer ever,” with Jeff Beck, Michael McDonald, Tom Jones, Burt Bacharach, pianist Dave Grusin and the band America all performing at the event, all of whom had previously worked with Martin after the producer’s work with the Fab Four. “Awards don’t come much better than this,” said the 82-year-old Martin. “I’ve been so lucky to work with so many wonderful people, and great talent all my life.”

Eddie Vedder on The Who: “These Guys Changed My Whole World”

7/14/08, 9:50 am EST

Eddie Vedder can still recall the exact date of his first Who concert: June 18, 1980, at the San Diego Sports Arena. By then, Kenney Jones was drumming in the band, and he “was on fire,” Vedder remembers. “These guys changed my whole world. It’s a big part of why I get to do what I do.”

Vedder and Pearl Jam got a chance to repay that favor on Saturday at the VH1 Honors tribute concert to the Who at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, reaching across the generations to perform two songs from the Who’s 1973 concept album Quadrophenia . Following sets by the Foo Fighters (who covered “Young Man Blues” and “Bargain”), Flaming Lips (who performed a Tommy medley that included “Pinball Wizard” and “Sparks” and Wayne Coyne’s signature bubble) as well as from Incubus (”I Can See for Miles” and “I Can’t Explain”) and Tenacious D (”Squeeze Box”), Sean Penn introduced Pearl Jam, who erupted with “The Real Me” and a soaring, emotional reading of “Love, Reign O’er Me,” as a string section swelled with Vedder’s Daltrey-like wail.
