NEW PROGRAMS

A choir made up of prison inmates . The Prison Choir sees a music teacher and a psychologist spending two months with 14 inmates, training their voices and using singing as an unusual therapy. The format is soon to air in Spain on TVE and was created by 3 Koma in Spain.

Sci Fi UK has announced its first drama production deal . Ice Planet (22x45') is a CGI sci-fi drama series that follows a crew of scientists and soldiers on a maiden voyage into outer space in response to an alien attack. Created by SpaceWorks Entertainment (Canada), and produced by Sci Fi and international partners, the series is due for delivery in October 2006.

Steven Spielberg is entering the reality TV arena . The director has partnered with reality guru Mark Burnett for On the Lot, an unscripted series for Fox aimed at discovering the next big Hollywood director. Combining elements of American Idol and The Apprentice, the series (from Mark Burnett Prods., DreamWorks TV and Amblin TV) will feature 16 aspiring filmmakers who compete for the big prize: a development deal with DreamWorks.

NEW DEALS

BBC America has acquired UK drama Life on Mars . The deal occurred the day after it was reported that a US version of the series is in the works at ABC. The 8x60' series, about a driven and ambitious young detective who finds himself sent back to 1973 after a near-fatal car accident, is due to air on BBC America later this year. Life on Mars is a Kudos production.

Channel One Russia has launched a local version of The Golden Girls . With a title that translates as Grown-up Girls, the sitcom focuses on four single middle-aged friends living together in a typical Russian country house: Nadia, Margo, Irina and her mother Sofia. The Golden Girls aired on NBC for seven seasons from 1985 to 1992, garnering 65 Emmy nominations and ten wins.

Psychic Challenge picked up for development in the US . Bunim/Murray Productions has taken the Trisha Goddard-hosted supernatural search format that aired on the UK's Five network in January. Psychic Challenge aims to expose psychic pretenders and examine those who claim to possess such powers. After a special in December, the series debuted on Five in January, with Goddard challenging so-called psychics to prove their powers.

GSN revives a studio-based family entertainment. The US cable station dedicated to games and game shows, has revived a half-hour quiz format from as far back as the 1950’s. I've Got a Secret will debut on April 17th, updated via Burt Dubrow Productions. The show will be hosted by Bil Dwyer. GSN already airs reruns of the original. Airing from 1952 to 1967 on CBS, I've Got a Secret is based on the classic yes/no Q&A; parlour game. The format was later revived in syndication in 1972, and again on the Oxygen Network in 2000.

Granada International has inked various deals for Dancing on Ice . The format, which has already performed well for ITV in the U.K., has been acquired by TV4 Sweden, TV2 Denmark, TV2 Norway, Nine Network and Mediaset, with options pending in other markets. The Mediaset version of the show will be produced by Magnolia and will feature the Italian skating duo Barbara Fusar Poli and Maurizio Margaglio. Australia’s Dancing on Ice will be hosted by Olympic Gold Medal winners Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean.

Brazilian telenovela success sold to Greece . Globo TV International has pre-sold Belissima to Alpha TV. The telenovela centres on the life of successful business leader, Julia Assumpcao, whose family is affected by success, beauty, jealousy and tragedy.

Austria embraces the telenovela genre . The Israeli distributor Dori Media Group has sold the Argentinean serial Rebelde Way to Austrian ORF. Rebelde Way now airs in around 50 countries worldwide, including Germany (Nickelodeon) and Spain (Cuatro, Jetix and Localia TV).
