Champia, Talukdar jump into lead

Special Correspondent

JAMSHEDPUR: Mangal Singh Champia and Jayanta Talukdar, both of who missed out on the world championship selection, roared back into form to occupy the top two positions in the men’s recurve section on the penultimate day of the three-day Tata Steel fourth National-ranking archery tournament here on Saturday.

The stocky Champia of Railways, known for his colourful bandana during competitions, came up with consistent display despite incessant rain and slushy conditions to record a total of 2007 points. Nine points adrift was Jayanta Talukdar of Steel Plant in the second place.

Overnight leader Rahul Banerjee of Steel Plant, slumped to third spot. The star of the day was Adonde Raju of Steel Plant. A junior from Andhra Pradesh, now a cadet of the Tata Archery Academy, Raju had lost his father early and his mother worked as a daily labourer to support her family.

As of now, Raju is in the Indian team frame but with two more rounds of 70m to go, his next rival, veteran Muni Ram Tirkey of Services or any of the other three in the eight short-listed for the final day’s action could overtake him.

Among the top six in the women’s recurve division, Dola Banerjee of Railways continued to rule with a total of 1654.

Top four will qualify for the Asian championship in November. Isiah Sanam of AP headed the men’s compound section with a total of 2034 points.
