Programs and activities

The Club of Madrid brings three principal resources to its work:

  • A unique and extraordinary mix of former Heads of State and Government and leading practitioners expert in the workings of democratic governance
  • A committed focus on democratic transition and consolidation
  • Programs with a practical approach and measurable results

One of the Club of Madrid?s major assets is the ability of its members to offer strategic advice and peer-to-peer counsel to current leaders striving to build or consolidate democracy. Members can also help focus much needed international attention on selected themes, regions or countries and leverage the work of other institutions endeavouring to promote democracy. The work of the members of the Club of Madrid is supported by a network of world-class political and academic experts who offer assistance on a range of democratic reform issues.

The Club of Madrid undertakes and participates in projects related to its core mission of promoting and defending democracy.  It seeks to utilize the first-hand experience of its members and the expertise of its advisors on projects that have a practical focus and clear agenda.

Dialogue, Diversity and Democratic Development - Development of effective political leadership strategies for social cohesion, a starting point for the democratic development of societies and nations, is the focus of this major Club of Madrid program. This program comes in response to a widespread call from leaders for effective policies and practices that will improve social inclusion and increase community dialogue. [More]

Energy and Democracy - With an immediate commitment to action, a sustainable energy future is possible and could be achieved at relatively low cost, with the needed political will and collaboration between developed and developing countries. This program is based on the fact that energy is central to sustainable development and poverty reduction efforts, as it is the motor of production and a key element of human development. [More]

Democracy, Security and Terrorism ? We aim to promote a vision of a world founded on democratic values and committed to effective co-operation in the fight against terrorism. Since terrorism is a global phenomenon requiring a global response, we convened the International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security in 2005, to develop an international strategy for confronting terrorism in all its forms through democratic means.
