You could lose a limb at Arizona Science Center
By Douglas Towne
Fascination with 3D animation will -- at least temporarily -- usurp Arizona Science Center visitors' preoccupation with 2-D anatomy at
Triple Play Day
. ?It?ll be an awesome day of technology,? says Meredith Barham, associate dean of the University of Advancing Technology, the event?s collaborator. ?Last year, we set up PCs and made technology happen for anyone visiting the Science Center." Activities include Rhythm Games, animation clips, and Citaga Game Engine and Photoshop stations, all using the latest software. ?The young visitors would have their pictures taken and then be able to properly morph their faces ? and, occasionally, the faces of their younger siblings -- into crazy monsters, or creatures with additional limbs," says Barham. "More often than not, they found removing appendages hysterical."

Bird on a Wireless
A-roaming we will go
By Clay McNear
The cast of
St. Verizon
|
We're old-school, and damned proud of it. We read actual books bought at actual stores. We don't own a DLP rear-projection TV or one of those newfangled Wi-Fi-compatible networked DVDs, but make do with a battered Sanyo and a cranky old VCR. Most of all, we refuse to be sucked into the Cell Phone Nation. Insidious bastards. That, of course, would make the title character of
The Confessions of Saint Verizon
-- the fictional patron saint of cell phones -- an insidious bitch, but not really. Verizon is a middle-grade saint seeking full-fledged canonization; however, the miracle that would put her over the top, as it were, eludes her until she encounters Saint Kevin -- the real-life patron saint of blackbirds. Yep,
blackbirds
. The latest entry in the "Lunch Time Theater" series was co-written by Cindy Brown, Julie Peterson, and Serena Torres Webbe. Appropriately, says Torres Webbe, it was penned almost exclusively by e-mail. "I would write a part, then Julie would write a part. We came up with a lot of different ideas, then funneled them all down and came up with a linear script. That was
our
miracle," says Torres Webbe with a laugh.

Arizona Opera gets some screen time
By M.V. Moorhead
Sword to the wise: Don't miss
Throne of Blood
.
|
Elmer Fudd in Wagnerian drag, bellowing ?Kill de wabbit! Kill de wabbit!! Kill de wabbit!!!? -- that?s as close to opera as many film buffs want to get. But to show that there's common ground between the two art forms, Arizona Opera is presenting the
Opera Film Series
. The Opera?s season kicks off in October with Verdi?s
Macbeth
. Not coincidentally, the film series begins with another superb adaptation of Shakespeare?s unmentionable Scottish play:
Throne of Blood
, Akira Kurosawa?s brooding 1957 epic that resets the tale in medieval Japan. The second film, on August 20, is the splendid 1925 silent
The Phantom of the Opera
. This film?s presence in the series is justified because it?s a treatment of the Beauty and the Beast theme; next March, the company will mount Andre Ernest Modeste Gretry?s 1771 work
Zemire et Azor
under the easier-to-market title
Beauty and the Beast
. The film series wraps up on September 17 with
Madame Butterfly
, Frederic Mitterrand?s 1995 film of the Puccini favorite, which is also on Arizona Opera's slate for the new season. The series is sponsored by Bentley Projects.

Comics give us the bird
By Clay McNear
Mr. G
The Five Fingers
|
Consider the finger. It's bony, utilitarian, sports that beastly knuckle, and isn?t particularly sexy -- unless you happen to be a masseuse, a hand model, or a ho. The digit is also decidedly unfunny. Right? Wrong, according to the quintet of Arizona comics behind the
Five Fingers of Funny With a Twist Stand-Up Comedy Show
. Each yukster represents a different appendage: The pinky finger (Darren Elder) is gay, the ring finger (Erik Miller) is married, the middle finger (John Buber) is a crude party animal, the pointer finger (Armon Williams) is a sports fan (think one of those idiotic foam-rubber thingies), and the thumb (Nick Tarr) is, well, they?re not telling. The title ?twist? is a guest appearance by nationally known comedian Scott Kennedy.

Flapjack
FHM
cover girl Tera Patrick
|
Anyone else been watching VH1?s
Supergroup
lately? Other than Sebastian Bach?s histrionics and the Nuge?s surliness, the highlight for us has been former Biohazard vocalist and bassist Evan Seinfeld?s banter about his films with his more-famous wife, porno superstarlet
Tera Patrick
. Now, how Seinfeld ever scored a beauty like Patrick is beyond us, and we don?t necessarily appreciate having to see Seinfeld?s gnarliness unveiled in flicks like
Tera, Tera, Tera
, but we?d damn well like to see her in person. Wish fulfilled!
FHM
?s July 2006 cover girl, and the subject of countless self-abuse cases, will be appearing and signing autographs.

Stand-Up Guy
Hughley's job's a joke
By Wynter Holden
courtesy of Tempe Improv
D.L. Hughley
|
D.L. Hughley
has made a career out of bad career choices. He ran with L.A.'s infamous Bloods gang until the shooting of a relative caused him to rethink that path. He changed his ways and became a telemarketer -- 'cause, yeah, that?s not a dead-end job -- and finally a comedian. For Hughley, the third time was the charm. He was the original host of BET?s
Comic View
, made numerous appearances on
Def Comedy Jam
and starred in
The Hughleys
, a sitcom based on his own experiences after moving to the suburbs. Hughley?s success is due in part to his ability to entertain children and adults with equal ease. One minute he?s voicing the Gadgetmobile from
Inspector Gadget
and the next he?s keeping the bleeping network censors bleeping busy on his solo stand-up show, Comedy Central?s
Weekends at the D.L.
Who?s next on his chopping block? Brangelina? Rush Limbaugh, with his secret stash of penis-popping pills? Hughley?s routines change with the times, but there?s one public figure unlikely to escape unscathed, even in a "red" state. ?President Bush said he will lead an investigation into what went wrong,? Hughley announced on Comedy Central after the Hurricane Katrina fiasco. ?Isn?t that like O.J. sayin? he?s gonna find the real killers??

A scene from the film
Torsten Kretchzmar: Entschlossenheit
|
There's no denying it -- this has been an enormously dull summer at the box office. With about 250,000 sequels, remakes, and poorly conceived novels turned blockbusters, we need a break from the megaplex. Luckily, it?s time for
Microcinema International?s
Independent Exposure
, a traveling celluloid showcase by the San Francisco-based indie champion and distributor. Microcinema has shown its works in literally every corner of the globe -- including Antarctica (really!) -- and the group is one of those wonderfully idealistic organizations that gives voice to small-time artists with big-time things on their minds. According to Stephanie Martz, Microcinema's associate curator, we can expect to see an ?eclectic survey of contemporary moving-image artists who are working in a variety of genres and mediums.? Can?t say that about

Graphic novelist draws on his experience
By Douglas Towne
An example of Ryan Cody's artwork
|
?Learn the basics from me and take the world by storm,? crows Ryan Cody, who, with a few strokes of his pen, is capable of eviscerating diabolical villains or steadying collapsing bridges. Cody will pass on techniques of creating superhuman characters in his
Comic Art and Cartooning Class
. ?[The class] will be fun for kids -- of all ages,? says Cody, who has published one comic miniseries and has two others set for release. ?The class is a way to share my skills, teach young artists, and make a little extra money so I can feed my kids,? he says. The six-week session, open to both advanced and novice sketchers, will cover character design, life drawing, concept creation, and the principles of sequential art, with students eventually creating their own comic book. Cody broke into the comic world through Internetworking and countless hours of drawing. ?The class is pretty unique in that I am working in the industry,? says Cody. ?For roughly $8.25 a session, it?s a downright steal."

The Passion of the Chris
Wiseacre Isaak rocks in the round
By Niki D'Andrea
Elvis-esque singer-songwriter
Chris Isaak
has always had a self-deprecating sense of humor, even in his home videos. Some pre-concert footage from one of those home movies aired on the cable channel E! in late June, with Isaak addressing the camera during sound check: "We did some of my songs last night and they didn't go over so well, so tonight, we're gonna be playing ABBA and Blue ?yster Cult." As much as we'd love to hear Isaak's rendition of "Dancing Queen" or "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," we're looking forward to hearing his own songs. After all, he's got a slew of great original tunes, including the hit singles "Wicked Game" and "Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing." He can crank out a cover, though, as anyone who's witnessed his live rendition of Dorsey Burnette's "It's Late" can attest. The last time we heard Isaak tackle that tune, he was performing it as a duet with Valley songbird Stevie Nicks and cracking dirty jokes in front of her parents. That Chris Isaak. He's such a rebel.

Gun Ho!
By Wynter Holden
Wanda and Brutus seem like the perfect couple until their sadomasochistic relationship hits the skids and the two fight bitterly over custody of their apartment. Sounds like the makings of a sappy Jennifer Aniston flick -- until, that is, the story evolves to include an overzealous cowboy who chokes on a pretzel and hands out guns like candy. Sounds oddly familiar, no? Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright John Patrick Shanley's deliciously vicious comic parable
Dirty Story
, which the
New York Times
called "appallingly entertaining," promises to shock and awe. ?The play is a metaphor,? says director Carolyn Marbury. ?It?s relatively obvious for anyone who keeps up on current events.? Of course, for all of the gun-toting, Bush-supporting, AIMS-test-flunking dropouts who'll be at the theater, Wanda yells "Call me Israel" at the end of Act One just to make sure y?all got it right.

Rolling With the Punchers
Gurlies, Beaters mop up the floor with one another
By Douglas Towne
?Our team chemistry is unmatched, and we pride ourselves on having the hottest racks and asses in the league,? says Brickhouse, listing the reasons her team, the Surly Gurlies, should trounce the Bad News Beaters in the
Arizona Roller Derby Playoffs
. ?The Beaters best bring their ?A? game unless they want to spend their evening mopping our sweat off the floor with their asses,? she snarls. Their opponents, however, are convinced that the Gurlies? pirate logo will soon fly at half-staff. ?I think the momentum has really started to build with our team,? says Beater Rayna Rage. ?We are prepared to bury some pirate booty.?

Tribute band has Van Halen covered
By Brendan Joel Kelley
courtesy of Ralph Saenz
Atomic Punks
|
There?s not really such a thing as a ?good cover band,? in our opinion, unless you?re wasted at a wedding or bar mitzvah, but if there were such a thing, the
Atomic Punks
would have to qualify. Even Van Halen, the authors of the catalogue that the Atomic Punks rip off, gives the faux-tistes its endorsement. In David Lee Roth?s autobiography
Crazy From the Heat
(and, yes, we do own that book), Diamond Dave calls them ?the best tribute to Van Halen ever!? Well, Double-D is a little biased, of course; the Atomic Punks play Roth-era VH hits, not the Van Hagar repertoire. Shit, twice now Roth has even recruited axmen from the Punks to go out on tours with him, and VH bassist Michael Anthony has sat in with the band. Why do you care? Well, ?cause ?Panama? and ?Hot for Teacher? rocked back in the day, dood. And you get all the costumed, glittering glory of David Lee Roth in the form of Punks front man Ralph Saenz (though Ralph's name just doesn?t have the same ring to it). The show is all-ages, so you can take your kids down there and show ?em how you rocked out in the good ol? days.

Competitors in the

will have more than just trucks to grind. The all-amateur extreme-street-skateboarding competition showcases the best local skate talent busting out radical kick flips and killer shove-it variations on an urbanized street obstacle course filled with curbs, ledges, handrails and stairs. ?It?s a cool event for local kids to show off what they got, since they don?t get a lot of chances to compete,? says Jason Mangum, City of Peoria Director of Teen Programs. The one-of-a-kind tour features a Junior Jam for the young dudes and dudettes, while the winner of the Main Event receives the kick-ass prize of a free trip to the nationally televised finals in Portland, Oregon, this August, plus an opportunity for pro recognition. The competition is open to the first 120 registrants for males and females age 18 and under, and skate-gear giveaways include tee shirts, Vans shoes, and protective equipment.

Former flyboy earns his wings with comic zings
By Clay McNear
Comedian T.A. Burrows
doesn't have a buzz cut, and this is disappointing. We were pretty gung-ho to check out a dude who cut his comic teeth in the Air Force and then climbed onstage to get all up in our face like the drill sergeant in
Full Metal Jacket
. Alas, the five-time winner of the Air Force's Worldwide Talent Competition is now a suave-looking gent whose flyboy days are long past. But Burrows is still the bomb onstage, specializing in understated comedy and dead-on vocal impersonations of folks like Bill Clinton, Johnny Mathis, Neil Diamond, and Peter Falk's raggedy-man detective Columbo. The funnyman's extremely weird r?sum? also includes a singing stint with a Las Vegas lounge act and voice-over work for a CD-ROM titled

Who's Your Dada?

A Greg Pentkowski work from "Neo Dada 3"

If chaos and joy were compatible emotions, they?d find their release in the art of Dada, that nonsensical post-World War I movement that paved the way for Warhol, and, unfortunately, the pretentious kind of jerks who swear a pile of dirty laundry is totally ?art.? Don?t buy that it?s pretentious? Check this definition from Wikipedia.com: ?Dada was not art. It was anti-art.? Suuuure. But, overly affected or no, the stuff is interesting, and the opening of the
