For centuries, countless explorers, servicemen, scientists and tourists have attempted to reach the North Pole. Methods of travel have included ships, balloons, aircraft, dog-sleds, skidoos and even a motorbike, as well as the arduous business of sledge-hauling. More expeditions have failed than succeeded, and it is estimated that only 72 people have reached the North Pole from the coast by surface traverse (Headland, 2001).

The following is a selection of significant North Pole achievements and previous successful non-commercial sledge-hauling expeditions (ie. independently organised expeditions without guides). With one exception, all the sledge-hauling expeditions set off from the recognised start point of the coast. All non-commercial unsuccessful women's attempts are also shown.

In 1997, the M&G; Polar Team were members of the first all-women's expedition to the North Pole. This expedition was a relay organised by the Polar Travel Company ( www.polartravel.co.uk ) involving two guides, Denise Martin and Matty McNair. As such, the expedition is not included in the following list.
