Casey FitzRandolph, born in Madison, Wisconsin, won a popular Olympic 500 m title on his home ground - in Salt Lake City 2002, to become the 6th US 500 m winner, and the first since his fellow Madison native,
Eric Heiden
, won the distance in Lake Placid 1980. The Olympic title was only his second victory in an international 500 m race. 3 weeks before the Olympics, he shared the victory on the 2nd day 500 m with reigning Olympic champion,
Hiroyasu Shimizu
. He got his big chance for an Olympic gold when the big favourite, Canadian
Jeremy Wotherspoon
fell in his first race. He did 34,42, the 2nd best 500 m ever at the moment, in his first race, but a false stroke in the beginning of the last curve almost cost him the gold. He beat silver medalist Shimizu by 3 one-hundredths of a second, the smallest margin ever in an Olympic 500 m.
He had his first success in 1997 when he won two 1000 m World Cup races in Calgary and skated the 2nd fastest 1000 m ever. He had big expectations for the 1998 Olympics, but he had some problems adjusting to the clap skates, and placed 6th and 7th on 500 m and 1000 m in Nagano. For the next two seasons he had a couple of World Cup podium positions and placed 5th on the 500 m in the World Single Distance Championships 2000. Aiming for his ultimate goal, an Olympic gold medal, he gradually improved his results towards the end of the pre-Olympic season, and finished the season with a 500 m bronze medal in the World Single Distance Championships. In the Olympic season he placed 2nd in four 500 m World Cups and in the World Sprint Championships, always behind Wotherspoon.
