COVER STORY
Covering Amartya Sen
As early as 1986,
Frontline
carried a Cover Story on the economics
of Amartya Sen (November 29-December 12, 1986). The feature, which was published
on the eve of the World Economic Congress in New Delhi, carried a description
of his multifaceted contributions to economics as well as a wide-ranging,
6,900-word interview with Sen. In the interview, which was conducted in Helsinki
where Sen was a Research Advisor at the World Institute for Development Economics
Research (WIDER), Sen spoke to
Frontline
on development economics,
schools of economic thought and themes in his own work. The article and interview
paid specific attention to the connections between economics and philosophy
in Sen's work, a theme highlighted in this year's Nobel citation. Sen also
spoke to
Frontline
about Maurice Dobb, the teacher whom he considers
a major influence on his work.
Since then
Frontline
has featured articles by and about Amartya Sen
on many occasions.
Frontline
has published four essays by Sen. Two
of them were "Hunger and Entitlements - Research for Action" (April 2, 1988)
and "Authoritarianism vs Cooperation - Perspective on Population Policy"
(October 7, 1995). Two others appeared in
Frontline
's Special Issue
on the 50th anniversary of India's Independence (August 22, 1997) and were
titled "How India has fared" and "Reasoning and Freedom - If Tagore were
to see India today". He also spoke to
Frontline
for a feature published
after the death of his teacher Bhabatosh Datta (January 25, 1997).
Frontline
has carried articles on awards that Sen has received (April
5, 1997), on his leadership of the American Economic Association (January
29, 1994) and on his appointment as Master of Trinity College, Cambridge
(July 12, 1997).
