About Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan is the service that supplies library materials not owned by the UVM Libraries for the use of eligible users.

Items that typically do not circulate through ILL include: reference sets, periodicals, audio/video materials, software, genealogical materials, test and textbook materials, maps, unpublished works. Please contact ILL staff with questions.

Interlibrary Loan works best for users with one-time, short-term needs. Users who have long-term or repeated need of specific publications should contact our Acquisitions Department at 656-2633 or recommend a purchase (see http://library.uvm.edu/services/recommend ).

Who may use this service

University of Vermont students, staff, and faculty, as well as research affiliates and UVM distance learners may use this service.

How to place a request

Prior to placing your request, please consult the UVM Libraries Catalog to ensure that the item you need is not owned by the UVM Libraries.

Requests should be submitted online. If you do not have access to a computer or are having trouble with the online form, written requests can be made using cards that are available at the Bailey/Howe Reference Desk or Cook Chemistry/Physics Library.

Please supply as much information concerning the material you need as possible. If you are unsure of the accuracy or completeness of the information you have please contact the Reference Desk at Bailey/Howe before submitting your request.

How long it takes

Copies generally arrive in 3-10 business days after the request is placed. Items to be returned usually arrive in 7-18.

Rush delivery of journal articles may be available for a fee. Please call 656-2242 for details.

Unless a need by date is indicated, ILL will continue to attempt locating materials until the request is filled.

You will be notified by e-mail when your materials arrive. ILL materials that need to be picked up will be held at the Circulation Desk, Bailey/Howe Library.
