The objective of the National Football Museum is t
o
preserve, conserve and interpret the greatest collections of football
memorabilia in the world.
On opening its doors to the public in June 2001, the National Football
Museum became the first and largest major football museum in the world.
Located underneath two stands at Preston North End's Deepdale Stadium,
the museum is situated in an area rich in footballing history. In
1889 Preston North End FC were the first winners of the oldest League
in the world. The club also plays at the oldest, continuously used
League ground in the world, having played its first game at Deepdale
in 1878. Preston were also instrumental in helping to change the game,
from a sport played by gentlemen amateurs, to a game played by paid
professionals.
The
Museum is an independent charity owning several major collections including
the FIFA Museum Collection, and has acquired on long term loan the FA,
Football League and Wembley collections.
Over 1,000 objects are on display, at any one time, from the 25,000
artifacts in storage. Many of those exhibits not on display can be found
on loan throughout the UK and indeed Europe. Like other National Museum’s
and Galleries the loan of temporary exhibitions, in appropriate locations
and within suitable environments, is a valuable income stream for our
charity.
Recently
an exhibition was hosted at the World Cup in Japan as well as similar
displays in Germany and France.
