T he National Sports Festival is held every October featuring competition in 39 different sports by participants from all over the nation. The festival is held on a rotational basis in major cities, including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju and Incheon.
 
T he Children's National Sports Festival is also held annually for primary and middle school students, drawing over 10,000 boys and girls from across the country. The National Winter Sports Festival, held every January, includes speed skating, figure skating, skiing, ice hockey and biathlon.
 
A nother annual event is the National Sports Festival for the Handicapped. Held each year since 1981, it brings together people from all over the country and provides the opportunity for these individuals to demonstrate their sports skills.
 
S kiing has fast become a popular winter sport among Korea's youth in recent years. Ski season in Korea is rather short, from late December to early March, during which shuttle buses run between outlying resorts and Seoul. Every February the Foreigners' Ski Festival is held at the Yongpyeong Ski Resort, while several thousand tourists from Southeast Asian countries visit Seoul in the wintertime to enjoy skiing and skating at resorts scattered throughout the country.
 
M any Koreans have become avid sports fans, mainly due to the emergence of two Korean stars on the world sports scene, Park Chan-ho in baseball and Pak Se-ri in golf. Park Chanho was an ace pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and now plays for the Texas Rangers. He recorded 15 wins in 1998 and a career-high 18 wins in 2000, has established himself as a bona fide star in the U.S. major leagues.
 
A s a 20-year-old rookie Pak Se-ri became the youn-gest female golf champion ever to win four LPGA championships: the McDonald's LPGA Championship, the U.S. Women's Open, the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic, and the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic, all during the 1998 season. She was chosen as the LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1998.
