ABC spike from
King spooker 'Hospital'

Best debut of season among adult 18-49 viewers

By Diego Vasquez

ABC, more than any other network, has had difficulty in launching dramas the past two years. It has introduced more than a half-dozen; none have registered strong debuts, much less lasted.
But with the launch of "Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital" last Wednesday, ABC at least broke the first part of that pattern.
Without a lead-in of considerable note, "Hospital" registered the strongest drama debut of the season among viewers 18-49 with a 5.5 rating.
In fact, "Hospital" was the biggest debut for a drama in the demo since CBS's "Without A Trace" followed a season-premiere episode of "CSI" back in September 2002.
For ABC it was the strongest drama debut since "Alias" first aired two and a half years ago.
Drawing on Lars Von Trier's Danish miniseries "Riget," "Kingdom Hospital" comes from one of the scariest guys on the planet, Stephen King. The series focuses on a strange mix of both patients and staff, with the sound of a girl's tortured voice ringing through the hallways.
The cast includes Andrew McCarthy, Diane Ladd and Ed Begley Jr. "Kingdom Hospital" was ABC's highest-rated show in 18-49s last week and tied for 14th with NBC's "Las Vegas," "Fear Factor" and "Law and Order: SVU."
ABC's next highest-rated show was budding Sunday success "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," which finished tied for 29th.
"Kingdom Hospital" will move to its regular time this week, Wednesday at 10 p.m., and will add to the competition for drama viewers in that slot.
NBC's usually dependable "Law and Order," which also airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m., showed its age last week with its lowest numbers for an original episode in years.
"Law and Order" tied for 19th with "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" in 18-49s for the week, posting a 5.1 rating, the show's second-lowest since February 1999.
At the top of the chart, Fox and "American Idol" continued to do their thing, accounting for three of the top five shows in 18-49s last week.
The Tuesday competition edition of "Idol" was the week's most-watched show in 18-49s, attracting just over 14 million viewers and posting an 11.0 rating in the group. Tying for fourth with an 8.5 rating were Wednesday's results edition of the show and a Monday special, "American Idol: Uncut, Uncensored and Untalented."
"Uncut" featured some of the best of the worst tryouts in the show's history, including William Hung, the "She Bangs" guy.
NBC's "The Apprentice" continued to impress, finishing second last week in 18-49s with a 9.8 rating against a rerun of CBS's "CSI."
The network also got strong numbers from the season finale of "Average Joe: Hawaii" in the Monday 10 p.m. slot, up 49 percent from NBC's average thus far this season. The return of "Crossing Jordan" Sunday at 10 improved on the network's average time slot rating by 20 percent.
That helped NBC to a 4.3 average for the week, good for first and barely edging Fox's 4.2 average in 18-49s. CBS finished third with a 3.6 average, and ABC's 3.0 average placed fourth place.
