User Summary:
Released in March 1998 by Blizzard Entertainment, Starcraft became a phenomenal international success. More than 10 years later, there are still professional gaming leagues centered around this game (primarily in Korea where it rivals the popularity of other sporting events). In 2010, Blizzard began releasing a series of sequels to continue the legacy of this franchise.
This real-time strategy game has three radically different, but well-balanced factions. The Terrans are humans with a balance of marines, tanks, and other earth-based sciences. The Zerg are insect-like creatures that create living structures and use bio-based weapons. The Protoss are an advanced psionic race that combined powerful technologies with stealth. Although each race has a radically different set of units and playing style, they have proven remarkably balanced over time.
Although the game comes with compelling single-player campaigns for each race, the multiplayer mode is the true star of this game. Each player selects a race and attempts to destroy their opponents by growing their force from a simple harvester into a complex army. As players build various buildings, they continue to advance along the technology tree allowing them to create increasingly more powerful and sophisticated forces. In the end, only one faction will emerge victorious. Will it be Terran, Zerg, or Protoss?
