Heshtja
eshte mungesa e tingullit te degjueshem te ambientit, emetimi i tingujve me nje intensitet kaq te ulet saqe ata nuk terheqin vemendjen per veten e tyre, ose gjendja e ndalimit te prodhimit te tingujve; Ky kuptim i fundit mund te zgjerohet duke perfshire edhe nderprerjen ose mungesen e cdo forme te komunikimit, qofte permes fjales apo ndonje mjeti tjeter.

Ndonjehere folesit heshtin kur ata hezitojne te kerkojne ndonje fjale ose nderpresin veten para se te korrigjojne veten e tyre. Analiza e ligjerimit tregon se njerezit perdorin heshtje te shkurter per te shenuar kufijte e njesive prosodike ose si shenja reaktive, p.sh. si nje shenje e pakenaqesise, mosmarreveshjes, sikletit, deshires per te menduar, konfuzionit dhe te tjera. Intervalet relativisht te zgjatura te heshtjes mund te perdoren ne rituale te caktuara; ne disa disiplina fetare, njerezit ruajne heshtjen per periudha relativisht te gjata, apo edhe per pjesen tjeter te jetes se tyre, si nje mjet asketik te transformimit shpirteror.
