Nga gjashte speciet e zhdukura, pese u zhduken ne kohen e shuarjes Kuaternare. Prej tyre Bison palaeosinensis evoluoi ne kohen e Pleistocenit te Hershem ne Azine Jugore dhe ishte paraardhesi evolucionar i Bison priscus ( bizonit te stepes ) i cili ishte paraardhesi i te gjitha llojeve te tjera te Bizoneve . Duke filluar prej para rreth 2 milion vjetesh e deri rreth viteve 6,000 pes, bizonet e stepave varionin neper stepen e mamutheve , duke banuar ne Evrope dhe Azine Veriore me Bison schoetensacki (bizonet e pyjeve) dhe Ameriken e Veriut me Bison antiquus , Bison latifrons dhe Bison occidentalis. Speciet e fundit qe u zhduken jane, Bison occidentalis , pasuar nga Bison bison rreth viteve 3000 pes.

Nga dy speciet e mbijetuara, bizoni amerikan, B. bison , i gjetur vetem ne Ameriken e Veriut , eshte numerikisht me i madhi. Edhe pse zakonisht njihet si nje buall ne Shtetet e Bashkuara dhe Kanada , ai lidhet vetem me buallin e vertete . Speciet e Amerikes se Veriut perbehen nga dy nenlloje, bizonet e rrafshet, B. b. bison , dhe bizoni i pyjeve, B. b. athabascae , i cili eshte edhe emri i Parkut Kombetar te Wood Buffalo ne Kanada. Nje nenlloj i trete, eshte bizoni lindor ( B. b. Penncilvanicus ) qe nuk konsiderohet me nje takson i vlefshem, duke qene nje sinonim i vogel i species B. b. bison . ^[1] Referencat per "bizonet e pyjeve" ose "bizonet e drureve" nga Shtetet e Bashkuara lindore i referohen ne menyre konfuze ketij nenlloji, dhe jo B. b. athabascae , e cila nuk gjendet fare ne rajonin ne fjale. Bizoni evropian, B. bonasus , gjendet ne Evrope dhe Kaukaz , rishfaqur pasi qe u zhduk ne natyren e eger.

Ndersa te gjitha speciet e bizonit jane klasifikuar ne nje gjini te tyre, ata ndonjehere jane mbareshtuar me bagetine e gjedheve (gjinia Bos) dhe per te prodhuar ndonjehere pasardhes fertile te quajtur beefalo ose zubron.
