Agnosticizmi
eshte pikepamja se
ekzistenca e Zotit
, hyjnores apo e te
mbinatyrshme
s eshte e panjohur ose e panjohshme . Nje perkufizim tjeter i dhene eshte pikepamja se "arsyeja njerezore eshte e paafte te jape argumente racionale te mjaftueshme per te justifikuar besimin nese Zoti ekziston ose jo."
[1]
besim
ne qenesine apo mos qenesine e perendive.
Ne dallim me trajten e fuqishme te
ateizmit
, agnosticizmi nuk perjashton ne parim teresisht mundesine e qenesise (ekzistences) se nje Qenijeje Hyjnore. Agnostika eshte vendosur keshtu si kendveshtrim i trete midis
teizmit
dhe
ateizmit
Agnosticizmi eshte thelbi i shkences, si i asaj antike ashtu edhe i asaj moderne.
?
Thomas Henry Huxley
Karl Popper
do ta pershkruante gjithashtu veten si agnostik.
[2]
Sipas filozofit William L. Rowe, ne kete aspekt, agnosticizmi eshte pikepamja qe arsyeja njerezore eshte e paafte te siguroje baza te mjaftueshme logjike per te justifikuar nese Zoti ekziston apo jo.
George H. Smith, ndersa pranoi se perkufizimi i ngushte i ateizmit ishte perkufizimi i zakonshem i perdorimit te asaj fjale,
[3]

[8]
Drejtuesit e hershem te kishes se
krishtere
perdoren fjalen
greke
gnosis
(njohuri) per te pershkruar "njohuri shpirterore". Agnosticizmi nuk duhet te ngaterrohet me pikepamjet fetare qe kundershtojne levizjen e lashte fetare te
Gnosticizmit
ne vecanti; Huxley e perdori termin ne nje kuptim me te gjere, me abstrakt.
[9]
[11]
Ne literaturen teknike dhe ate reklamuese, "agnostik" gjithashtu mund te nenkuptoje pavaresi nga disa parametra ? per shembull, "platforme agnostike"
[12]
ose "pajisje agnostike".
[13]
Filozofi Skocez i Iluminizmit
David Hume
pohoi se theniet domethenese rreth universit jane gjithmone te shoqeruara nga nje fare dyshimi. Ai pohoi se gabueshmeria e qenieve njerezore do te thote qe ata nuk mund te marrin siguri absolute, pervec ne rastet e parendesishme kur nje deklarate eshte e vertete sipas perkufizimit (p.sh. tautologjite sic jane "te gjithe beqaret jane te pamartuar" ose "te gjithe trekendeshat kane tre kende").
[14]
- Agnosticizem i forte (i quajtur edhe "i mbyllur", "i rrepte" ose "agnosticizem i perhershem")
Nje agnostik i forte do te thonte: "As une as ti nuk mund ta dime nese nje perendi ekziston apo jo."
[15]
[16]
[17]
- Agnosticizmi apatik
- Nje agnostik apatik do te thoshte: "Nuk e di nese ekziston ndonje hyjni apo jo, dhe as qe me intereson".

Properly considered, agnosticism is not a third alternative to theism and atheism because it is concerned with a different aspect of religious belief. Theism and atheism refer to the presence or absence of belief in a god; agnosticism refers to the impossibility of knowledge with regard to a god or supernatural being. The term
agnostic
does not, in itself, indicate whether or not one believes in a god. Agnosticism can be either theistic or atheistic.

People are invariably surprised to hear me say I am both an atheist and an agnostic, as if this somehow weakens my certainty. I usually reply with a question like, "Well, are you a Republican or an American?" The two words serve different concepts and are not mutually exclusive. Agnosticism addresses knowledge; atheism addresses belief. The agnostic says, "I don't have a knowledge that God exists." The atheist says, "I don't have a belief that God exists." You can say both things at the same time. Some agnostics are atheistic and some are theistic.

To believe in the existence of a god is an act of faith. To believe in the nonexistence of a god is likewise an act of faith. There is no verifiable evidence that there is a Supreme Being nor is there verifiable evidence there is not a Supreme Being. Faith is not knowledge. We can only state with assurance that we do not know.
