Qe prej publikimit ne vitin 1959 te kryevepres se tij “Tamburi” nje sukses planetar i adaptuar ne kinema nga Volker Schloendorff , i cili fitoi Palmen e Arte ne Kane dhe cmimin Oscar per filmin me te mire Gunter Grass nuk ka reshtur te perballe vendin e tij me te kaluaren naziste. Grass ishte njeri prej perfaqesuesve te Grupit ’47, e cila ishte nje levizje qe kontribuoi ne rilindjen e Gjermanise pas epokes se erret te nazizmit. Mes veprave me te njohura, shkruar me nje gjuhe te pasur, plot fantazi dhe ironi bejne pjese ”Cat and Mouse”, ”Dog years”, ”The call of the Toad”, ” The Flounder”.
