Posobil ako emeritny profesor socialnych vied na Harvard University Bol spoluzakladate?om ?asopisu The Public Interest. Posobil ako predseda Commission on the Year 2000 - Komisie pre rok 2000 vytvorenej v roku 1967 American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Tato komisia publikovala vysledky svojej prace v roku 1967 v ?asopise Daedalus pod nazvom Towards the Year 2000 - Work in Progress a neskor?ie aj kni?ne. Od roku 1992 bol prezidentom Tocquevillovej spolo?nosti. ?il v Cambridge, Massachusetts v USA.
Metodologicky sa opieral o tezu nezavislosti troch sfer modernej spolo?nosti: 1. technologie a ekonomiky, 2. politiky a 3. kultury: Ekonomika sa buduje na zasadach efektivnosti, politika na zasadach rovnosti a kultura na zasadach sebarealizacie.
Pod?a Bella sa moderna spolo?nos? posobenim svojich kon?titutivnych principov (orientacia na vykon a zisk, idea sebarealizacie, rovnostarstvo at?.) dostava do stale hlb?ich protikladov sama so sebou. Dosledkom toho su socialne konflikty, ktore tenduju k celkovej sociokulturnej zmene, po ktorej odklone od modelu kapitalistickej priemyselnej k postindustrialnej spolo?nosti bude hra? hlavnu rolu nova spiritualita a nabo?enstvo.
