The Scarecrow ( Dr. Jonathan Crane ) is a fictional Batman supervillain who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics . He uses fear gas to scare his victims and even Batman. He wears a scarecrow mask and a scarecrow costume.

He first appeared in World's Finest Comics #3 (September, 1941). ^[1]

Jonathan Crane was bullied at school. He was called mean names like "Ichabod Crane", because he looked like the character Ichabod Crane from the book Sleepy Hollow . Because of this, he became obsessed with fear. He became a psychologist and learnt about fear. He lost his job for using his patients as tests for his fear gases and drugs. He then became a criminal.

He was played by Cillian Murphy in Batman Begins , The Dark Knight , and in The Dark Knight Rises .
