Satsuma Province ( 薩摩? , Satsuma-no Kuni ) was an old province of Japan in the area of Kagoshima Prefecture on the island of Ky?sh? . [1] Its abbreviation is Sassh? (薩州).

In the Meiji period , the provinces of Japan were converted into prefectures. Maps of Japan and Satsuma Province were reformed in the 1870s. [2]

Hirasaki jinja and Nitta Hachiman-g? were the chief Shinto shrines ( ichinomiya ) of Satsuma. [3]
