Ethel Lang (nee Lancaster ; [1] 27 May 1900 [2] – 15 January 2015) [3] was a British supercentenarian and, at the time of her death, the oldest living person in the United Kingdom (after the death of Grace Jones on 14 November 2013), [4] the ninth oldest living person in the world and the second-oldest living person in Europe after Emma Morano .

Lang was born in Worsbrough , near Barnsley, to Charles and Sarah Lancaster . She left school at the age of 13 to work in a shirt factory. She married William Lang in 1922 and their daughter Margaret was born in 1923. Lang's mother lived to the age of 91, and her great-grandmother to the age of 92. [5] [6]

Lang was the last living British person to have been born during the reign of Queen Victoria . [7]
