Countdown to Extinction is the fifth studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth . Countdown to Extinction was released on July 6, 1992. It was released through Capitol Records . The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and sold 128,000 copies in the first week. [1]

The album was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 1993 Grammy Awards . [2] The title track won the Humane Society 's Genesis Award for raising awareness for animal rights issues. [3]
