On July 27, 2022, very heavy rainfall hit parts of eastern Kentucky and southwest Virginia , including surrounding Appalachia communities. This cause large floodings in Kentucky. [3] The flooding caused 25 deaths with many reportedly missing. [1] [4] [5] [6] [7]

On July 29, President Joe Biden said the flooding was a major disaster in Kentucky and ordered federal aid to help state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected. [8]
